Chapter Fourteen Khloe Anderson Using icing, I designed what was the last of one hundred and twenty cupcakes I'd baked earlier, and placed it in its rightful box. It was Friday- Logan grandmother's birthday. I'd decided to prepare two dishes for the meal which I could only guess is a three course meal. The dishes I chose were scalloped potatoes and chicken enchiladas. And for dessert, I prepared different flavored cupcakes each with their unique icing design, and brownies which would be best served with vanilla ice cream and syrup.

There were rows of houses inhibited by small families who made enough money to go by. As usual, my grandmother’s face was pressed to the glass door when I got there. I was early for dinner, that impressed my mother. “We’re having pineapple upside-down cake for dessert,” mum said. Pineapple upside-down cake is my favorite, I like anything that contains sugar but this one is special. This time, I was careful enough to look around and I noticed an extra table was set. “Mum,” I called in a warning tone. “Who did you set the extra table for?”

"Let's open our eyes to this beautiful sunny morning?" "Prince! Good morning!" She smiled and shifted in bed to sit up. I helped her sit up and then pulled the support table closer to her. On it, I had arranged six cupcakes on a white plate: four chocolate ones frosted in pink and two strawberry ones frosted in blue, each with a small lit candle on top. Also on the table was her breakfast and a vase of colorful flowers with a small sign that read "happy 30 weeks". It was my way of celebrating the milestone she had worked so hard to reach.

“But it’s nice. Seeing that side of him. The side that just wants to be there.” Upstairs, a drill whirred, followed by Charles’s triumphant “Got it!” and Maverick’s quieter “Nice one.” Raina grinned. “Sounds like the boys are almost done. We should finish these cupcakes so we can have something to celebrate with.” They worked in companionable quiet for a while, pouring batter into liners, sliding trays into the oven, setting timers. The kitchen filled with the bright citrus scent of lemon zest and the warm sweetness of blueberries bursting in the heat.

Below the cupcakes, there were some bottles of strawberry crush. As he kept digging further, he discovered many some flavored treats like wafers, pocky sticks, candies, and much more. The last thing he pulled out was a fluffy strawberry shaped pillow. it had a winking expression and pouty lips. He turned it around to find a sticky note which read, "I'm sorry" in tiny handwriting.

"So did you guys decide which one is my favorite item on the menu?" "Key Lime pie." One guy piped up. "Apple crumble Cake." The other said with so much concentration I had to hold a back smile "Pineapple upside down cake." The overly enthusiastic guy said, who had accepted the bet in the first place. "Rhubarb." The last guy said. I looked at the four boys whose names I didn't know and just shook my head, telling them that all of them were wrong. "Aiden? What about you?" "Blueberry muffin?" He looked like a cute, little puppy when he skimmed over the menu in the hope of finding my favorite item.

I set them on the cooling rack and make a few notes in my notebook before I go get a shower. I choose my outfit carefully, a loose, casual dress I can quickly remove with slip-on shoes. Once I’m changed, I check myself in the mirror. I don’t look out of place. People won’t notice anything strange. Satisfied with what I see, I go back to the kitchen and put a thick layer of cinnamon cream cheese icing on the cupcakes. I add orange and gold sprinkles for effect.

I slipped on one of the aprons hanging near the door, grabbed a clean towel for my shoulder, and made my way to a counter tucked by the back window. They gave me space. They always did. I started with the one who needed the most convincing to eat. Abriel. His favourites were simple but had to be just right. Cinnamon pancakes—thin, fluffy, stacked with honey, and a little smiley face made from sliced banana and berries. He liked them in sets of three. Not two. Not four. Just three. I mixed the batter carefully, whisking until it was light and airy, pouring it into the hot pan with practised ease. The cinnamon hit the heat and rose through the air like home.

My daughter is completely not phased by this, but she regularly samples off of everyone else’s plates when they have something she’s unfamiliar with! When dinner has been cleared away, Loyalty serves the cupcakes she made. The base is chocolate and the icing is like a super smooth peanut butter whipped topping. They’re amazing! After Stephany has two, she is wiped clean and sent to bed, leaving Jonny, Meme, and I to demolish the remaining ten cupcakes in the tray. “This is the best cupcake I’ve ever had, it’s like a Reeses in cupcake form”, says Jonny. “Make me these for my birthday”!
