The entire layout of Black Rock Pier was locked in a complete blackout, the primary light fixtures turned off, leaving only the amber beams of the logistics cranes to cut through the dark.

Towering, rusted cranes loomed out of the fog like mechanical monsters. "We're three minutes out," Ross announced, cutting the SUV’s headlights. It looks just like the forest from that night in my dream. I step outside into the darkness and look up at the stars. There is no light pollution here and the stars shine brightly in the sky. I hear a branch break behind me and I see a black figure move from the corner of my eye.

Then black. Nothing.

*A FEW HOURS AGO* A convoy of sleek black cars pulled up one by one outside the old Volkov palace. The loud screech of their tires cut through the cold air, grabbing the attention of both guards and servants who glanced up to see what was happening. The weak sunlight struggled to break through the gloomy grey clouds, giving the day a more ominous vibe than it was meant to have.

Ms. Piper got up from her desk and rushed to the classroom door to look out. The entire school was black, as far as we could tell, like the electricity had all gone out. There was a row of windows in the classroom, but it was a dark wintry day, so not a lot of sunlight was filtering in. The wall inside was painted black which looked like darkness engulfing every part of the building. The door of the building was opened from outside which produced a ‘creak’ sound. My breath fogged the air, and my fingers were numb, but that wasn’t what made me stop. The house was dark. Pitch black. No porch light. No warm chandelier glow from the windows. Not even the damn fairy lights Venice insisted on wrapping around the stair railing like it was still Christmas.

"I'll be there." At Midnight. They arrived silently... like ghosts swallowed by the night. All dressed in black, their faces hidden beneath hoods and shadows. It wasn't a known place.
