And a guy who looks like he eats rocks for breakfast is standing by the lamppost pretending to read a newspaper. Who reads a physical newspaper in 2026? It’s suspicious.” My appetite vanished.

***** Few hours later. The wind outside howled like a damned soul, cold cutting straight through the seams of my cashmere coat as I staggered out of my black Range Rover. The tires crunched the thin layer of fresh snow like brittle bones. I slammed the door shut, half-drunk and half-frozen. My breath fogged the air, and my fingers were numb, but that wasn’t what made me stop. The house was dark. Pitch black. No porch light. No warm chandelier glow from the windows. Not even the damn fairy lights Venice insisted on wrapping around the stair railing like it was still Christmas.

"I'll be there." At Midnight. They arrived silently... like ghosts swallowed by the night. All dressed in black, their faces hidden beneath hoods and shadows. It wasn't a known place. It wasn't even a safe place. It was somewhere forgotten - a hollow stretch of land nestled between rusting factories and broken power lines. No signs. No life. Only the sharp bite of wind and the eerie hum of an old, flickering floodlight in the center of a gravel pit. The air was still, like the world itself was holding its breath.

Dark clouds heavy with rain blocked out the moonlight, leaving outside a pitch black. Standing on the porch, the angry winds blowing liquid shards of ice against her body, Penny could see nothing. She bit down to hold back the clattering of her teeth. She could see nothing, and all she could hear was the angry wailing of the wind and the thundering of the storm. The light from the inside of the house ended at her feet.

She already knew escape was not an option because she could see that the fences were still very much holding, and very much high. Escape was nowhere in sight but her wolf, she itched. “You can't be serious.” She said out loud. “Now, you wanna come alive, Snow girl?” But she kept moving. She got to the third creek and then she heard the noise, much louder than what she had left behind her, and much stranger too.

Pitch-black. The sky was almost pitch-black if it were not for the startling flashes and instantaneous streaks from the bolts of lightning that crack the eerie dark. Flickers of light revealed the foggy visibility brought by the heavy downpour of rain which seemed to know no respite. Drops of rain were like pellets showering the roof with percussion. The night was conquered with unrest as the howling wind cut through the towering trees in gusts, and with its rush, the thunder roared in resonance. Violent.

"Look at me! Do not let the darkness scare you!" Through the broken windows, the world outside looked like a nightmare. The main courtyard was no longer covered in melting snow. The black ice was back, tearing through the stones like sharp teeth. Directly above the ash pile where the old totem used to be, the black circle in the sky started to spin. It grew bigger and bigger, turning into a giant whirlpool of dark dust and starlight.

Descending darkness slowly blanketed the sky, painting it in hues of magenta and pink. The setting sun cast a warm glow on the sleepy estate as residents retreated into their cozy homes for the night. The trees stood still, their branches bare and exposed against the orange sky. A distant owl hooted its way into the silent evening, and the only sound that punctuated the quiet was the crunch of leaves beneath her feet as she strolled through the deserted streets. As Chelsea wandered through the streets, she couldn't help but notice an eerie silence that had cast a spell on the entire estate. Although one could hear the faint hum of distant traffic, there were barely any sounds in the neighbor

He put a hand on Sid’s shoulder, and the two of them exchanged words I couldn’t hear. It was dark outside. Quite dark. Just minutes ago, the gravel lot had been awash in light from all the cars, but now that people were leaving, it was growing darker and darker by the second. If I looked out the passenger window, I couldn’t see farther than maybe thirty feet or so. Then it all faded into nothing. Behind us, down the street, was the pale glow of streetlights. But soon, it would be full dark here, and I wanted to get out of this place before that happened.
