Karina was pinned hard to the marble floor by two bodyguards, her gown scuffed to rags, her face a smear of tears and foundation, her shrill wailing setting the whole gallery ringing. Leon was just about to speak and hand down the punishment when a dark mass of black-clad figures suddenly surged up from below. The tread of leather shoes on the steps was heavy and even, as all twelve elders of the Perrone family made their entrance.

"Trouble? Of course you don't. You're a coward. Why would you hide in a room?" He shook his head. "You don't get it." Slowly, he lowered himself until he was crouching, the movement almost seemed theatrical. "The world is ending, honey. You're supposed to fight for survival. The new world order isn't for the weak." His words gave me a clear answer. He knew somebody was inside, and he wanted the zombies to get in. But I still couldn't read him. He seemed unhinged and completely composed at the same time. I couldn't decide which one was real.
