HAYDEN There was something about seeing her smile that made everything else feel inconsequential. Even now, a few days later, I could still picture the exact way her lips curled at the corners, soft and hesitant like she wasn’t sure if she had permission to be happy. And that laugh, the one she let slip when I made some lame comment about how much of a bookworm she was, that one had rewired something in me. Something that made me feel very hopeful and I was holding onto that for as long as I can.

A real and unexpected bumpy laugh that later dissolves into a heart melting smile. For the first time, the very first time, I see through her and what it looks like to behold a glimpse of the raw part of a person that they never let others see. “You should laugh more, you know.” I can't help holding back the words before they tumble out of my lips. Her smile fades a bit. “You too. The only times I've seen your smile is with Cupcake.”

I stood in the middle of the living room, facing the security camera's blinking red light, practicing my smile again and again. Looking into the lens, I spoke softly, like I was leaving a message for the Mom who'd watch it someday. "Mom, look. I practiced the perfect smile again today. "Lift the corners of my mouth fifteen degrees and show eight teeth. The books say that's the most sincere smile. The one that makes people feel warm. "I've practiced so much my face hurts... but that's okay. "When you watch this tomorrow... will you tell me I did a good job? "Will you finally believe I wasn't lying to you?"

I said. That made her laugh. It was a beautiful laugh. It was not a laugh. The sound of her laugh made me happy. It made me feel good. I would do anything to hear her laugh again. I looked at her stomach. She caught me looking. "Don’t look at me like that " she said. I smiled. "What are you talking about?" I said. "You are smiling " she said. "I do smile " I said. "No you smirk " she said. "Smiling is different " she said.

How could she? "Join me." She poked her finger in my chest, asking me to join in her laugh. I shook my head slightly. I would prefer watching her laugh than doing it myself. "Let me teach you..." She came forward and placed her fingers on the corner of my lips and forced them up, making a curve "Here, we smile like this," she giggled, her eyes moving on my face. "You look so handsome while smiling. Laugh often; it comes free." Her smile broadened.

I stared at her, she licked her ice cream and smiled, pointing at the sky, -Oh, a rainbow. How can you smile like that?- I had to ask her. Her smile turned into a sad one, she shrugged her shoulders, -Crying is useless, it changes nothing. At that moment, a consuming intrigue about her was born in me, every day at the same time I waited for her in the park on 12th Street to talk to her on the swings, I knew she was only in Canada for the summer while visiting her grandparents so I wanted to take advantage of every moment. She understood me, she helped me see the good side of everything, to enjoy the taste of a good ice cream, to appreciate every fleeting moment of happiness.

I don't know how to fix her, how to fix the pieces of her heart, I had so mercilessly broken. Then her smiling face flushed infront of me, when she was sitting in that filthy restaurant, waiting to place her order, happy like a child waiting for her Christmas gift, how such small and simple things can make her happy, but still when I try to bring a smile on her face, I find it the toughest thing to do, when Jacob can do it just with his mere presence. I remember, there was one time when I had the same power over her, my smallest act of affection used to make her so happy, simply my mentioning that I love her will lead to the most beautiful smile to break through her lips, all my mistakes for

"I made you laugh." My cheek propped on my right knuckle as I showed a smile to her. It later infects her to smile as well. She swiftly throws a peck on my happy lips. "Isn't... this an abomination in the sight of the Moon Goddess?" She raises the tip of her lips and hisses, "Can you stand for it?"

I pulled her into my embrace gently and petted her affectionately as her head rested on my chest. "I understand your fears, but I promise you'll never be disappointed when you know more about me," I whispered in her ear and she smiled. Her smile was beautiful and soul-illuminating. It was like the first Sun after a rainy day. It came to dry away all the sadness and pain of the rainy days and usher in a new season. A season of happiness and joy.
