The pirate girl squinted her eyes trying to focus on the silhouette’s details, and after a few seconds she could identify some of them: the silhouette was a ship, apparently a merchant one, and on its deck, it seemed like there was the whole crew. Though no more than a dozen yards away, the pier itself remained invisible behind the fog. He was turning the boat when an oar snagged on something. He gave a tug. It wasn’t unusual to come upon refuse, rags, dead dogs. Once a half-submerged horse floated past. Whatever it was, the boat stalled and veered back into the channel. “What the blazes?” “What’s wrong, Guv?” A hand came over the gunnel. The youngest toff screamed. Yellow-vest ill-advisedly stood, rocked the boat, and staggered. Hook-nose half rose to grab his mate, further upsetting the boat, and Yellow-vest fell into the water.

As the sun dipped low on the horizon, casting a golden glow across the restless sea, Leo and I stood side by side on the deck of the pirate ship. The ship was a weathered beast, sturdy and seasoned by countless battles, its sails billowing with the wind that carried us further from the shore. The decision had been made: we would stay aboard for the night, too weary and too uncertain of the waters to risk traveling back to land immediately.

Nevio’s face was streaked with blood, and his eyes rolled back for a moment. He clenched his hand around the rail, the only anchor he had.
