I’m not just a coach’s daughter, or a college freshman, or even a fledgling wolf. I was a fighter who could run-think-fight survive beside my mate. And yet that was more frightening to me than anything. The Blackpine pack shifted around us. Asher finally rose. “We need to go back,” he said. “The pack will probably want to debrief, and... you need rest. “You’re not used to your powers going full-tilt like that.” I stood, grinning at him, brushing off some leaves.

Just towards the end of the lesson, Mrs Jones noticed that Ashley wasn't concentrating. "Ashley" She called gently but Ashley had totally spaced out. She was oblivious of her environment and her eyes were no longer focused. In her imagination, a man yelled, "You will no longer leave this place and that's final!" And then, there she was in a green robe and a silver crown on her head, crying like a baby. "Father...." "Ashely" Mrs Jones called again, snapping her fingers in Ashley's face. "Huh?" Ashley snapped out of her imagination. Balls of sweats trickled down her face and she quickly wiped it off with her handkerchief.

It was their first night back to the normal sleeping arrangements. Ash shook his head. “No, no, things need to go back to normal.” He pulled away from the doorway and made his way to their couch. “It’s barely been a week. You have to give yourself time.” Ash scrubbed at his face. “I’ve had nothing but time lately,” he replied with a painful smirk. “I am one thousand and twenty-six years old.” “I’m sorry.” “No,” Ash jumped up from the couch. “Don’t say that as if you have something to be sorry for.”

As soon as our plane landed at the airport just outside of the border of our pack, I bolted, shifting into my wolf so that we could make it to Felicity faster. She's been alone for far too long. Ash has been doing nothing but whimpering since we received the call that she was in the hospital. He wanted to tear the pilots head off when he told us that we wouldn’t be able to fly home until the storms passed through. Then, he wanted to tear my head off for leaving her in the first place.

“I have no special reason, really. I got interested in becoming a guard because they said you can travel far and wide anywhere the higher-ups assigned you to. That’s why I’m here.” I nodded understandingly. Back when I was Sakamaki Yuu, that travelling word never came across my mind right after I lost my legs. I thought I wouldn’t be able to travel for life, but thankfully, I reincarnated into this world. Maybe God wanted me to fulfill my dreams? Alaina POV I’m pretty sure I’m losing my mind! Every couple of days I see Ash. It's usually when I am extremely sad, and seeing him, for the brief moments, has started to bring me some comfort and solace. I have been thinking about my life, how did I end up here? When I left for Spain Fin was amazing, he was THE perfect guy, when I got back, I told him about Ash. I told him we rejected each other, and he seemed so happy. He said that he wanted to give me a little time before we mated and marked each other, and he wanted to give his mate a little extra time, to find him, before he rejected her too. I thought he was being sweet and respectful... but now we can go an entire day, or longer, and

”I replied. He sighed receding to my mind. Ash feels everything I feel, the pain of losing his pack mates and everyone dear to him. He was okay with me pretending to be human because I rarely shift and when he wants to go for a run, I go into the farthest forest and shift letting him out for some time. I know that Ash would also want to protect our mate, ignoring her doesn't mean we are neglecting her, he knows that I am trying to keep her safe.

“You weren’t authorized.” The man grins. “I never am.” I recognize him before he speaks again. Not by face—by weight. By the way the city pulls away from him like it doesn’t want to be noticed. “Name’s Ash,” he says. “Protagonist, depending who you ask.” Jonas’s voice goes flat. “You’re supposed to be off-grid.” “Yeah,” Ash replies. “So are ghosts.” He looks at me then. Really looks. No reverence. No calculation. Just recognition.

Even now. Especially now. But I also wanted more. I wanted to be worthy of her. I shifted suddenly, violently. Bones snapped. Muscles tore and reformed. The pain was a welcome punishment. Ash surged forward, sleek and massive, fur like smoke and coal. He hit the earth with a growl, shaking it loose beneath his paws. He ran. Not away from her. But to remember who we were without fear. We ran until the stars blurred. Until my lungs burned.
