He drew six children; four were girls while the remaining two were boys. He turned to look back at them. "I found out that the six children normally played with Patches but not at the same time. All of them were talking and laughing with each other but one of the boys caught his attention. That boy was standing alone in the corner. He was about the same age as Jean and was slightly taller than him, but Jean knew that boy was the most good-looking person Jean had ever seen. That boy had long hair which was tied in a ponytail and had a pale face. He had thick slanted eyebrows and bright black eyes. Jean knew he belonged to the noble family from the looks of his clothes but what did it matter to Jean. He wanted to be friends with that boy. He didn't think about their status.

Walking over to the log, I pry open my bottle of beer using the sharp edge before taking a single swig, immediately I'm met with a burning, bitter taste on my tongue. "There," I breathe out. His hand still clutched a piece of my shirt and through the tear, the white tape binding my chest was visible. The world seemed to stop breathing. Nyx blinked once. Then his eyes lifted to mine, slow and deliberate. “Well,” he said softly, almost a whisper. “That’s even more interesting.” My stomach twisted. “Don’t,” I started, but he laughed—low and ugly. “A girl. A young boy in a tattered tunic and brown leggings emerged to assist them. Thomas's eyes were immediately drawn to the boy's shoes, leaving him momentarily puzzled. Gelo cleared his throat, snapping Thomas back to reality and reminding him of their purpose. They dismounted gracefully, and Thomas tossed the reins to the boy, trusting he knew what to do. “Give him some extra oats; he’s had a long journey.” The horse, a massive black beast, towered over the child, who struggled to hold on as it whined and tugged. The boy stumbled, but Thomas quickly reassured his horse with a few calming words.

Everly is in the barn, and I go in to find her and tell her I’m leaving, and she should head in to start helping Aunt Kim with dinner. “Okay,” Everly says and goes to Thor’s stall. The pony flattens his ears and turns away from her. “Hey, little dude.” She undoes the latch on his door and slides it open a few inches but doesn’t step inside. “You’re going to be my friend by the time we leave.” “Just remember ponies are the OG creators of Little Man syndrome,” I say, swinging keys to Aunt Kim’s truck around my fingers. Everly laughs and turns away from Thor to look at me. “Oh, I remember. I learned how to ride on Star, and she was a chestnut mare and a Welsh pony.”
