I realized that they were a variation of classic novels! "You read too?" I asked him, bewildered. He doesn't seem like one to read... "Yes, I do." Wow, I never expected... "What's your favorite book?" He then asked while I observed the various volumes on his shelf. It's an amazing collection! And did I just saw a first edition Thomas Hardy book? I started to get all hyped as I answered his question. "Pride and Prejudice! It's such a good book, Dom!" He chuckled at my excitement. My cheeks heated up. He licked his lips before speaking...

Since then, he hasn't sent another one or even tried calling. I started packing my things into my suit bag to leave work for today. Corby was right. I do need a break and the best way to spend that, is by seating at home by the window, with a mug of coffee in my hand, while I read my favourite book. Pride and prejudice. The book helps me get away from my own life of loneliness and misery. Knowing Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy went through a lot with love, makes me feel at ease. Even though they did end up together, I'm not sure that, that part would apply to my life.

Not of the penthouse—I couldn’t do that—but of my own head. I started cleaning. It was a stupid impulse. But scrubbing the counters, organizing the spices, folding the towels—it gave me something to do. It gave me control. By noon, the penthouse was spotless. It still felt cold. It still felt empty. But at least it was clean. I sat on the couch, exhausted. I picked up a book from the shelf. It was a first edition of *Pride and Prejudice*. Damian’s copy. I opened it. Inside the cover, there was an inscription.

He tucks a strand of hair behind my ears. “You know I always do,” I said, reaching up to kiss him. He kisses me back, letting me explore his mouth with his tongue. After a while, he stops the kiss. “I got something for you,” he said with a gleam of excitement in his eyes. “Oh really,” I say, taking the box from his hands. I unpeel the brown packaging, wondering what he got me this time. It's a copy of Pride and Prejudice. “Adrian,” I whispered, opening the front cover.

And yet, the way he looked at her—from the leather sofa where he lounged like a king—made her feel like she did. “You’re still not choosing,” he said, eyes watching her reflection. “I don’t know how to choose,” she admitted softly. “Then let me.” He stood, approaching her slowly. “Wear this.” He handed her a black dress—backless, high-slit, silk that poured like liquid sin. Liara’s breath caught. “It’s too much.” “No. It’s just enough,” he said, his voice a low command. “Try it on. And next time someone questions your place, make sure they choke on their envy.”

He follows it up with silk hand gloves which he drops on my palms. Quietly, I follow his orders, taking care not to rip the hand gloves with my hastiness. "You can open it now." He pronounces. "You can't get much cleaner than that." With shaky hands, I skim the hand cover of the book, running my fingers through it and feeling the hard leather beneath my tips. Flipping it open, I stare in shock at the words written there. Pride and prejudice. Written by Jane Austen. Edited by William Gifford.

Next to it, placed purposefully at the center, was a single book. Its cover gleamed softly under the chandelier’s light. Deep emerald leather, trimmed in gold. The title: Pride and Prejudice. Emilia froze. She turned slowly back to Max, blinking. “Is this…?” He nodded. “A first edition. Signed by Jane Austen herself.” Her mouth parted, but no words came. “I ruined your original copy in high school,” Max continued. “Dropped it in the fountain during that stupid dare. You were furious.”

The only one I find that slightly fit the description is my favourite book of all time, Pride and Prejudice. I smile despite myself. Of course Massimo owns a copy. A thick leather-bound edition too that has probably never been touched. I tug it free from the shelf and carry it to the armchair in the corner, curling my legs beneath me, my sweater sliding off one shoulder. It’s too quiet in here. Almost as if I'm the only one in this big, grand house. The silence stretches long enough to suffocate me and my thoughts, and is only broken from time to time by the distant tick of the grandfather clock in the hallway.

I look over to where Primus had been sitting not so long ago. What's this? Primus left something behind. A book? Was this the gift he meant to give me? It is a small thing, dainty. I cannot imagine someone as large as Primus ever reading this because how could he ever hold onto it without breaking it? It looks so precious, and fragile. Even as a child, I can't imagine he would have been small or careful enough to read it. Gently, as if lifting a rose from a vase, I pick up the blush pink volume, marveling at the delightful texture of its silk binding, the title embroidered in gold. While I might not know many words yet, I know enough that I can read the title of this book.

When I turned to the kitchen to make breakfast, I noticed a big parcel wrapped in a red ribbon with a note, I know you always wanted this edition. I hope you like it. P.S. Breakfast is on the pan. E A smile lit up my face as I tugged off the red ribbon and opened the gift paper to reveal a beautiful hardcover of one of my favorite authors, Jane Austen. It was The Complete Novels of Jane Austen in lilac purple leather-bound hardcover. The book was heavy, but I was in utter awe at its beauty and the intricate design on the front cover. I loved it. I adored it, and I knew if I could, I would keep this edition on a pedestal.
