"My time here is almost over anyway. Forty eight hours."
"Yes," Jarrah whispered, his tone dropping into a low, slow sound that sounded almost like a prayer. "Forty eight hours and when that clock strikes, you must walk out those gates and never look back at the ashes of the Vance family."
"I won't," I promised softly. "I'm ready to take my name back."
Jarrah gave my hand a gentle squeeze before standing up. He began gathering his bowl and clothes, his movements smooth and practiced.
"Rest now, Merinda," he said, turning toward the door. "The ointment will do its work while you sleep."
