I mumbled absentmindedly. The old couples must be crying tears of joy if they were seeing how well the place they built with love had taken off. Mark nudged me with the folder and handed it to me. The proposal was detailed, clean, and well-prepared. I scanned through the lines quickly, noting the benefits – tax reductions, promotional backing, priority grants for expansion and other future projects and more. Everything was designed to make the project thrive. “That’s reassuring,” I replied, handing the folder back to Mark. “What do you say, Mark?”

"But finish that first. Cold it's not the same." I finished the pastry. I didn't read the journals that day. I put them on my bedside table beside the two mugs and looked at them and understood I wasn't ready yet. Not because I was afraid. Just because some things needed the right moment and this wasn't it. The right moment would announce itself. It always did. In the afternoon I submitted the Biotek proposal. Not the Knight Industries partnership version. The independent funding body version. Primary. On its own merits. With my name on it and the corrected methodology and the version four introduction that I had spent three weeks finding the right words for.

"I know," he said. "That's exactly what this project needs." He slid a folder across the table. "These are the terms I'm proposing. Take them home, read them, tell me what you want changed. I'm not interested in lowball offers, if I want your best work I need to make the conditions worth your best work." I opened the folder. The number on the first page made me blink. I was careful to keep my face completely neutral. "This is generous," I said.
