Lara recalled the cluster of security men converging on the helipad, blurred glimpses of an incredibly large white villa, and heat that only increased the nonstop pounding behind her temples. Jet lag had finally caught up with her. A rueful grimace slanted her face as she gingerly slid out of bed to gratefully appreciate that the ground beneath her feet was no longer rocking. It was dark outside. Locating the bedside light, Lara glanced at her watch. “8 pm… Are you kidding me?” The housekeeper, at least Lara assumed the warm, matronly woman who had come to her assistance was the housekeeper, had been a merciful savior. She had taken charge, banishing Christophe and helping Lara to bed.

As we chatted, Thomas came over with a bowl of piping hot special mushroom soup and a few small dishes for me. In the blink of an eye, the butler and the other servants had vanished from sight. He watched me until I had finished everything, then he finally relaxed and leaned back on the sofa. Without any preamble, he asked me, "I've agreed to help you get your revenge on him."

The sunlight seeped in slowly through the linen curtains—warm, golden, and languid. It bathed everything in warm, forgiving hues. Lily woke up for the first time in a long time without the weight of nightmares. No jolts. No screams muffled in her throat. Just breath. Steady. Real.

Aurelia The familiar path leading back to my childhood house felt a little strange. Perhaps it was because it had been a few weeks—months, even—since I had last been here. The heavy, black armored SUV purred to a stop in front of my mother’s modest home, instantly followed by two other security cars. Before the engine had even fully died, the doors flew open, and a sea of dark-suited men swarmed the driveway, discreetly marking the perimeter. Austin I am awakened by shouting at my door. I jump out of bed and grab my Glock 18 from the nightstand next to my bed. I am delirious from lack of sleep.
