It looks as normal as it could be. "I did it..." she whispered when the crow stopped squawking and fixed its gaze upon her. Karmina held the candle just a tad bit closer and noticed the blood that stained its dark feathers was also covered in black ink. She reached out cautiously and ran her fingers along its feathers, the black tainted blood smeared her fingers. As she smiled, the sense of relief washing over her, the crow's body expanded. First in its belly, then its head, until its body ruptured. She let out a scream as feathers, blood and bones splattered her and the inside of her hut.

All the way they traveled, they kept inside the clouds. "Are you feeling thirsty, sir? There's a river down below. We can go down for rest if you like," said the silver-beaked eagle three hours later with the attentiveness of a butler. "Just shut up and continue flying," said Chu Xun, "You can rest all you like when we arrive at Ravencrow." The eagle knew better than to say another word and it flapped its wings earnestly. Mount Ravencrow sat amongst a range of summits in the far north-east where it earned its name because it was once occupied by a raven mutant who set up camp there. The mutant was also a member of the Lost Races.

"I'll get it checked out. Don't panic." The moment I ended the link with Celeste, I immediately opened another one to Liam. "Call the border patrol. Get a report from all stations. Now." "On it," Liam responded without question. While I waited for Liam to report back, I kept my expression neutral, still pretending to watch the ceremony. But my eyes were scanning the crowd, looking for anything out of place, any sign of the danger Celeste had sensed. That's when I noticed them. Crows. Dozens of them, maybe even hundreds, circling above our gathering in a formation that was definitely not natural. They moved like a living cloud, their black wings blotting out patches of stars.

Trees shimmered in shades of silver and gold, while flowers bloomed in a rainbow of colors that danced in the gentle breeze. As Theo explored this enchanting world, he encountered friendly creatures with coats of every color imaginable. A rainbow-colored bird chirped a cheerful tune, leading Theo through fields of shimmering grass that changed color with each step he took. Butterflies with wings painted in iridescent hues fluttered around him, leaving trails of sparkling dust in their wake.

Even Rose and Kalen, Brady’s wolf, had a great time. The two of them became quickly and strangely obsessed with all the colorful roosters that were roaming wild on the island. To me, the roosters looked like chickens that had mated with peacocks, but Brady assured me that they were 100% roosters. Either way, every time we saw them Rose and Kalen would beg us to shift so that they could go and play with these curious-looking creatures. We had to keep reminding them that the roosters did not want to play with wolves or anything else that might want to eat them.

“It’s not natural.” The crows weren’t acting like birds. They weren’t trying to avoid the aircraft. They were attacking it—throwing themselves against it in a suicidal barrage, as if driven by some mindless command. Emma pressed herself against the seat, watching in horror as blood coated the windshield until they couldn’t see anything beyond it. The wipers tried to clear it, but it was too much. The whirr of the blades became a useless protest against the storm of flesh and wings. “I think they’re enchanted,” Emma muttered, more to herself than to Steve. “Or possessed.”

If she lets rip and her temper takes over, we’ll have another crow episode. That was devastating. Me and her were fighting over something dumb a year back in the forest behind the mansion, and she exploded at me. Her newer gifts are too fresh and unbound. Red-eyed, fangs out, fury in her veins, with a snarl and shriek, and then crows started dropping out of the sky like dead weights. Littering around her, one after the other like sudden fat raindrops, devoid of all life. Falling like rocks from above, we had to run and take cover. She must have sent out some angry sonic boom, because falling birds littering the ground like leaves in autumn is not normal.

Even down on the sheltered ground, loose wisps of my hair danced at the edges of my face. The crows and ravens had left their roosting perches in the trees to patrol the skies, painting endless feathery circles in the darkest of inks. They croaked and screamed and cried and shrieked, usurping the final signs of peace from the forest. Soon enough, a single drop of rain fell onto my forehead and dripped down the bridge of my nose. I felt the smoothness of its movement and closed my eyes as another fell onto my cheek and then my hand and then my foot.

I thought I could see someone stand on the bridge, but I wasn't sure. They had gone all out for the special occasion. The streets were incredibly clean, not to even mention the number of flowers they had decorating the shops and even the streetlights. It looked like we had straight-up walked into a magical fantasy land. "Welcome to Avian, girls." Gwen's voice sounded through our speakers. "As you can see, the streets are rather busy. It will take us some time to get to the castle." The streets only seemed to become more and more crowded as we got closer to the castle.

he roars up loud enough to make his voice reach even the hidden ears of children between and under the tall people. The low branch of the tree is no longer behind the king's head. The glowing round sun is making the crown on his glitter and his light brown face appears lighter closer to white. "Long live king, Thomas" hails the crowd in the consortium. Sound of whistles, wooden drums, and small ball stones striking in hand, rise in the air to the clear and bright sky. King steps down from the stone ring. The round glowing sun behind his head doesn't leave his company.
