AVIA The neighbors were at it again. The sound dragged me out of sleep slowly, like little fingers prying my eyelids open. The creaked rhythmically above my head, followed by a woman’s breathy moan that echoed straight through the thin plaster and into my skull. I groaned and rolled onto my stomach, shoving my face into the pillow hard enough to smother both the noise and my irritation. It didn’t help. The bed squeaked above me. A headboard knocked against the wall. Someone gasped a name that almost sounded like mine… or maybe I imagined that part, my half-asleep brain twisting then into something else.

Cages layered the walls with all kinds of captured creatures. “Oh my holy lord.” Prince Vaugn whispered as he looked around. “These are all magical creatures. It is no surprise a monster escaped from here.” But now that I could see better, I realized I had almost walked straight into a glass wall. On the other side, shadows echoed into eternity. A large cavernous dip plunged into the black darkness below on the other side of the glass wall. Across the canyon, a giant turquoise lizard slept.

Between her ears there was a red crest that gave the impression of a hairdo.

The first time he saw that creature in the mirror, at first he thought that it was just a hybrid of animals. But the moment that he saw its sinister gaze and smile, Raine’s heart skipped a beat, and realized that it was not an animal hybrid. It is an entirely different creature. And Raine fears that it came from an entirely different world from theirs.

She chuckled. “Do I sound very violent?” Zadkiel asked getting anxious which made Rose smile. “See… you and violence don’t come close. You’ve got two creatures inside you. The thing stumbled back, dazed just long enough for her to press the rifle to its chest and pull the trigger. Boom. It crumpled. Not dead. But down. The third creature entered slower, cautious. Its head tilted, golden eyes narrowing. It sniffed the air, then snarled something not quite words but not animal either. “Pact born,” it rasped. Ari’s lip curled. “Better than whatever you are.” Then she lunged claws forming from her own hands now, not weapons but part of her. The two clashed hard, teeth and muscle, until Kael rejoined the fight, slamming the creature into the ceiling before tossing it through the window.
