My voice came out low, almost careful, as if I was afraid of the answer. Raven’s lips tightened, and she took a slow breath. “She is not only a human and a wolf,” she began, her tone quiet but steady. “There’s something else in her. I can’t detect what the next one is, but when I touched her, I felt a shock of familiarity. It’s like touching a soul I once knew.” She paused for a long second, her expression unreadable. “And she has a dark past,” she added softly. The words dark past hit me like cold water.

The scene hit me like a punch. Marek was on the floor, curled on his side, coughing thick, dark blood that soaked the floor. His skin was grey, lips blue, eyes rolled half back. Raven stood over him, arms crossed, a tiny glass vial dangling from her fingers like a pendant. Four of my own men knelt with guns to their heads, held by her personal guards. The servants were trembling in the corner. Raven smiled, sweet and poisonous. “Took you long enough.” I crossed the room in three strides and wrapped my hand around her throat, slamming her back against the wall. The vial stayed steady in her grip, taunting me.

None of the guests had even laid eyes on Sephora as of yet, which would both be of use and a hindrance.
