I forced myself up, shaking off the dizziness, just in time to see Raven suspended over the ritual circle, black flames below her.
"Stop this," she said, and her voice was steady despite the terror in her eyes, she still looked courageous. "Please. You don't have to do this—"
"But I do," Malachar said almost gently. "Nothing personal, werewolf witch. Just business."
He made a sharp gesture.
The black flames surged upward, engulfing Raven completely.
Her scream cut through the air, loud pitched, painful, enough to make me dream and hear about it for decades.
