I felt Ryan tense beside me, his eyes shifting between Raven and me, seeking clues in our expressions. "I'm sure you have a good reason," I interjected, offering a hopeful smile. Raven rolled his eyes, seemingly unimpressed by my attempt to ease the situation. The underlying animosity between Ryan and Raven was palpable. Ryan, possessive and protective, harbored a clear disdain for Raven. "I'm actually glad Raven is here. I have something to ask him," Ryan stated with an icy smile, his aura pulsating with a surge of fury. My skin prickled, a reaction to the palpable anger radiating from Ryan. The air crackled with tension, and I braced myself for the storm about to unfold.

Raven Six years later…. I scrubbed the bartop as a couple left for the night. It was a busy Friday night at my restaurant, and pride swelled in me as another duo of rogues came and took the spots the couple had vacated. “Evening Raven,” one of them said. “The usual for us, if you would!” “Always a pleasure Ryan,” I said as I poured their beers. “Anything from the kitchen?” “Give us a minute love, we just got here!” the other, Paul, teased.

I suddenly look up and notice that we’re surrounded by twice as many birds as before. My sudden anger is filled with fear. “Oh no…” I whisper. “What?” Raphael looks up. “They’re definitely planning to attack us,” I mutter. He looks at me with surprise and then begins to laugh. “Ravens don’t attack.” “Oh yes, they do! And you can’t make me think otherwise. They attacked me once.” He laughs even more now. I stare at him, not knowing I was a damn comedian. His laughter comes to a stop. “You do know that in the wild, ravens have a special relationship with wolves, right? They tend to be friends.” He looks up. “Ravens and wolves are really smart creatures.”

“Murderer! Where’s my sister?!” A girl pushed through the crowd, her face streaked with tears and dust. She grabbed another stone, rage twisting her features. Before she could throw it, someone moved faster. A tall figure stepped between us, his arm coming up just in time to block the blow. The world seemed to still. I looked up, and there he was. Alaric. The Raven King himself. His eyes… deep, stormy gray, locked on mine. His jaw tightened as he turned to glare at the crowd, his presence alone enough to make grown men bow their heads.

But my heart does not like it. A muscle jumped in my jaw. “Too bad,” I muttered. “Hearts lie.” On the screen, Raven lifted her head. Her gaze moved slowly around the restaurant. At first, she looked past the camera. She looked at the door.... the tables....the lights. Then her eyes came back. And this time, she looked straight at the man holding the phone. Straight into the camera. Straight at me. My breath caught. Her eyes were dark and sharp. They locked onto the lens like she could feel it. Like she could feel me.

Both of them were an inch shorter than the man, yet he was making himself so small that they seemed to tower over him. "Ay losers! We got it," Zak's voice rang out. "Showtime, bitches." "Light this shit up!" Blake encouraged with genuine joy in his voice. Their freedom was so close. Raven laughed. "I'd love for this to be a little more bloody, but my brothers are quite impatient," she told the man. With a swift and skilled flick of a finger, she lit a match and dropped it on the ground. The letters that Raven wrote for him littered the floor, along with the gasoline. Both exploded in a dance of flames.

As we got to the top of the stairs and along the corridor to their room, I saw Jace was already here. “That’s for joining us Jace.” He rolled his eyes and my mum growled leaving him to look at the floor. Goddess only knows why he’s so scared of her. “Open the door.” She commanded the rogues outside the door. We walked in to see Raven sat on the bed with Zach behind her, combing and drying her hair for her. When did he turn into this guy? “What do you want?” Raven growled out. “My dear daughter, I just came to show you that you are still my pumpkin, and I will have your back no matter what.”

I cleared my throat. "I am Raven Volkov and this is my marked mate Noah Brinx," I said and heard the murmurings get noisy. "Both your families are well known in several cryptid circles, you're both like Royalty, but don't expect me to bow. I don't do that, " she said sternly. I nodded hoping that she could see it in the dark.

RAFE After the kids left for school, I waited as Raven got herself ready for the day. I sit on the edge of our bed as she gets dressed and I take in her every movement. The way her back arches when she bends to pull her pants on. The way she tilts her neck exposes our mate mark as she gathers her hair up in a ponytail. Pulling her loose sweater down, she stops as she realizes I’ve been watching. “Enjoying the show, dear?” She teases.
