What the hell were they talking about? “I swear I don’t know anything,” I whispered desperately. “I don’t even know who Ravens is.” One of the men barked out a laugh. “Damn. She really clueless.” “Not our fucking problem,” another muttered. The gun pressed harder into my skin and my breathing immediately turned shaky again. “You hear that, Ravens?” the man said into the phone. “Fourteen hours before we paint the floor with her brains.”

The great hall of Ravencrest was alive with the low hum of conversation, the clink of goblets, and the rich scent of roasted meats, spiced wine, and burning pine logs in the massive hearths. Lanterns hung from black iron chains, casting warm golden light across the long tables draped in dark banners embroidered with the Ravencrest sigil. A wolf howling at a blood-red moon. Liera stood near her mother’s side, her posture straight and regal as befitted the daughter of Asheville’s Luna, but her mind was elsewhere.

“I saw it. One of them. Before the Hollow struck, there was a shadow moving… and it wasn’t one of your wolves.” Raven dropped to her knees beside him. “Who?” Ragnar’s brow furrowed, sweat dripping down his temple. “I don’t… know the name. Tall. Dark hair. Cloak with the council’s crest.” Gasps echoed. The room erupted in snarls and denials. “Enough!” Raven roared. The chamber fell silent instantly.

“Y-yes ma’am. Forgive me for not asking first.” “It’s okay,” I say, softening my tone. We retreat back into the hallway, away from the cold air that felt way too much like him. The next hallway is brighter—not cheerful, but at least not nightmare-fuel. Two doors sit side by side. The maids lead me into the room on the left. I stop. And stare. The room is breathtaking. Lilac bed covers—my favorite shade. White carpets, a white dressing table, matching curtains, soft lighting, even the ceiling has a gentle lilac glow. It looks… intentional. Thoughtful. They make their way down the hallway, following the crowd of students and staff still in the building and when they get to the source, it’s a dead boy being put on a stretcher and about to be covered by the medic. Raven takes a glance at the boy and freezes, her heart thudding rapidly, on the corner of the dead boy’s lips is a purple trace of blood — the same she saw on Draco when he was announced dead, by wolfsbane.
