A Little Bit of Joy

A Little Bit of Joy

"Yeah, tell me 'cause I sleep halfway through even picture books." I sighed and leaned back on the chair. "I just like to lose myself in fiction to forget reality. You know, a reality where my life's too short to do stuff like they do in books. Or even in real life like falling in love, having children, growing old, finding some treasure in some remote island, murdering someone--- " "You can still do that, I'll help you hide the body," he suggested while waggling his eyebrows and because of his creepy expression, I laughed.

Life Works in Mysterious Ways

Life Works in Mysterious Ways

I said and he had that toothy smile of his sadness was gone and it was replaced with happiness and excitement. “What…what is it?” Little one clapped his hands wiggling in my arms. “You have to wait and see. It's in the car.” I said turning around walking towards where I left my heels. “Little one, who is the women?” It suddenly came out of nowhere. “She wants papa to marry her but I don't like her.” Little one said, crossing his arms. “Oh.” Was all that came out. Again that same feeling came back.

Love, Life, and Other Stuff

Love, Life, and Other Stuff

Brooklyn asked. Turning away from Kendall, he said, “It’s a short piece about a man looking back on his life as he is dying.” “Wow, that sounds interesting,” Addy said. “I think it sounds a bit depressing,” Shea said, frowning. Brooklyn nudged her and said, “I think that sounds fascinating. I can’t wait to see it.” “I’ll have to let you know when the festival is and get you some tickets if you’d like to see it,” he offered.

The Third Room [MxM]

The Third Room [MxM]

The silence wasn't passive — it listened. Only three other students were up there. One with headphones hunched over architectural blueprints. Another asleep on a pile of highlighted Marxism texts. The third moved like a ghost between the shelves, never stepping too hard. Noah sat. Opened his book. Flipped past the pages he was supposed to read and settled on a sentence he'd already underlined, not remembering when. "Life escapes; and perhaps without life nothing else is worth while." He stared at it for a long time, his fingers curled slightly against the edge of the paper. The ink shimmered faintly under the old library lights — weak, uneven fluorescents that cast shadows in directions they

There was still hope! I held my breath, hoping the silence would help her notice the phone ringing above me. Sure enough, Mom walked straight to the refrigerator this time. A sliver of light slipped in from outside. She squatted in front of the fridge and peered inside suspiciously. Above my head, the phone chirped and sang, "Hush, little baby, don't say a word, Mama's going to buy you a mockingbird. And if that mockingbird don't sing, Mama's going to buy you a diamond ring."

The Little Wild Secret

The Little Wild Secret

An instant later, a thunderous crash shook the heavy door. The lock screeched, a metallic wail. The three little ones on the bed, sensing danger, fell silent. They clung to me, shivering against my stomach. As the door began to give way, I shut my eyes, hopeless.

Falling For His Forsaken Wife

Falling For His Forsaken Wife

She spoke about partnership and creativity and building a life that honored both people's authentic selves. Then it was my turn to read. I stepped forward, holding the small book of Mary Oliver poems. "Miguel asked me to read 'The Summer Day' by Mary Oliver. It is a poem about attention. About choosing how we live deliberately instead of letting life happen to us." I read the poem slowly, letting the words settle. *"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"* When I finished, I looked at Miguel and Diana. They were holding hands, both crying, clearly understanding what the poem was asking them.
