Jayden didn’t reach for it immediately. “Read it.” The man hesitated for a second. Then said quietly: “‘Inside the Roberts Empire: The Woman Behind the CEO — And the Secrets They’re Hiding.’” My stomach dropped. The room shifted instantly. Another phone buzzed. Someone else pulled theirs out. More screens lit up. More headlines. More notifications. It was spreading. Fast. I grabbed my own phone. The article had already gone live. I opened it. The words blurred for a second before coming into focus.

JADEN’S POV The articles appeared on a Friday morning. I found them before Ethan called. I was at the breakfast table with my phone when the first notification pushed through from a financial news alert I had set up years ago for exactly this kind of thing. I opened it. Read it once. Set the phone face down on the table. Picked it up and read it again. Then I set it down and ate the rest of my breakfast in complete silence.

Betty’s eyes went wide at the title, and Elena felt her brows furrow, her forehead creasing into lines as she leaned closer and tried to read the article as well. She read the first paragraph and her heart stuttered. “What the hell?” She whispered. “Are you seriously kidding me right now?” She snatched the tablet from Betty’s hand, staring down at the screen and rereading the same paragraph over and over again, in the hope that what she was reading wasn’t the truth. Betty was saying something beside her, but Elena couldn’t hear anything, she couldn’t think of anything. All she could see and feel was confusion and disbelief as her heart and mind refused to believe what the article was claimin

Results started loading. I clicked on the first article and started reading. I had three weeks until the new deadline. Time to figure out what all the hype was about.

It's awful isn’t it?" he says, rolling his thumbs shyly. "Article?" He points to the plastic wrapped magazine next to my desktop. It is the magazine I and Elijah had to interview for. It is their newest edition and would you look at that. On the cover Elijah and I are staring back at me, looking like happily-ever-after personified. "Oh? I didn’t even know that it was out already", I say, reaching for the magazine and taking off the plastic wrap, "you say the article is awful? How is that?"
