The Christmas Contract
By the time she moved, the room was already dark.
She carried the book with her out to the balcony at the back of the house, the one that overlooked the beach. The air was cooler now, salted, the kind of breeze that wrapped around your skin like comfort. A soft outdoor light flickered on automatically, bathing the space in a warm glow, providing her with just enough light to read.
She curled into one of the chairs, bare feet tucked beneath her, and kept reading. Waves rose and fell in a steady rhythm, everything was so peaceful out here, she could stay here the whole day.
