She heard Rachel say to her. She watched as the kids all grinned at her as they acknowledged their names and she looked yowsrds their gook shelf. “Well my lovelies what would you like me to read to you today?” She asked them suddenly. She watched as they placed their hands on their chin as she froze and thought it over. She felt her body shudder at the thought as she watched as they reached over to the shelf and they pulled one of the books away from it.

Instead of trying to get closer, I simply smiled and gave them a small wave before making my way toward a cozy reading corner tucked between several low bookshelves. The shelves were packed with fairy tales, picture books, and children’s stories. “How about a story?” I suggested softly. As I scanned the titles, one familiar book caught my eye. I pulled it from the shelf and held it up. “Little Red Riding Hood. I think this one looks pretty interesting.” No one answered, but nobody moved away either. I took that as a good sign. He sat and he looked at the room. Two people at tables. One with a laptop. One with a book — the actual physical book, the open spine resting at the reading angle, the person's head bent at the concentration. A child in the corner, age perhaps seven, reading what appeared to be a graphic novel, the images large and the text secondary, the child absorbed in the same quality of sustained reading that the fourteen-degree chair had been specified to enable. He looked at the child.

With the specific contained laughter of someone who had decided that laughing openly would be unkind and was paying a significant physical price for that decision. By mid-afternoon it had become a group activity. I was in the library. Reading.
