"Get behind the pedestal!" Malakai roared, shoving me toward the marble center of the room.
He didn't hide. He stood in the center of the chamber, his feet planted wide, his submachine gun leveled at the door. He looked like a god of war, a man who had finally decided that the only way to be free was to burn the bridge behind him.
The door didn't just open; it disintegrated. The magnetic charge sent the steel slab flying inward, crushing a row of filing cabinets with a deafening crash. Before the smoke could even settle, three Reapers surged into the room, their suppressed rifles spitting silent death.
