MERRYN The first thing I saw was Rhydian, not the same Rhydian who stood in front of me every morning with that irritatingly calm expression. Not the King who could silence an entire room with one look. This Rhydian was younger. His hair was longer. His face was sharper, less controlled. He stood alone inside an archive, turning the pages of an ancient book beneath a pool of blue-white light. I stepped closer. He couldn’t see me. I knew that immediately. I looked over his shoulder. There was a name written across the page.

She laughed, thinking I was weak in mind, but somehow, a laugh tore from my chest. We laughed it off—the tension, the chemistry, just like we always did. I wasn't weak—I was just waiting for when she'd see me. Then, she'd be the first to find me as the dirtiest-hearted man who ever lived. The laughter filled the air until I raised the book in my hand. Fuck! One of her smutty books. “Drop that, Rhys!" She had barely stared a second before yelling. I didn't listen— as I flipped the thick cover of skulls and roses. The deduction read “To those who will always take it like the good girls they are….and would still swear they feel nothing"

“Did it?” I hated how my breath hitched. Hated how right he was. Before I could answer, another voice cut through the night — calmer, deeper, more controlled. “Starting the game without me again, brother?” Rhys stepped out of the shadows. Identical in every physical way, but the energy was different. Where Rylan burned hot and reckless, Rhys watched everything with cold, calculated hunger. His eyes dragged over me slowly, possessively, like he was already planning how to break me.

I want to leave that up to you guys. Option 1: I give you a couple of Rhys POVs to explain exactly why he felt he had to step aside, we wrap up his storyline quickly, and we focus on Nathaniel's redemption? Option 2: Rhys decides he isn't going down without a fight. He finds a way to balance the ledger and repay Nathaniel so they can both fight for Betty on an even playing field. This will give us an epic "Gentlemen's War." (Keep in mind, this will make the book a bit longer, but the angst and the tension will be off the charts! 🔥)

He says and I sigh. If I’m being honest with myself, I know he’s telling the truth. Ryo is not like any of the girls I know. She doesn’t play for an audience. She’s too honest and she’s real. It’s refreshing to spend time with her. I feel like I can just talk with her. No games, no pretending. “I promise you I won’t do anything to hurt her.” I say and he smiles. “I don’t get why you don’t let her be. You know you’re not interested in her so why keep spending time with her?” He says not really asking me the question. He’s just saying it so I can hear the words come out of his mouth.

“It’s fine, I know I wasn’t the easiest growing up.” The headmistress nodded and left. I looked at the book she threw before me. I felt Rhys pressing forward again. I rolled my eyes at her, “look who finally shows up.” She growled in return, “you wouldn’t believe me if I told you.” I picked up the book and made my way to my bedroom. I sat down on my bed. I tried to open the lock on the book, but couldn’t. I sighed, “great.” I felt my body changing when Rhys took control. Claws formed from my fingertips. With her claws she opened the book. Like the lock was made for her. The claws retreated when Rhys gave me back control.

"Which is fine. You're allowed to be scared. But don't pretend it's realism when it's actually self-protection." Rhys wanted to argue, wanted to insist that Phoenix was wrong, that his caution had nothing to do with fear and everything to do with practical assessment of the situation. But before he could formulate a response, R called out from across the room. "Papa! I found a book about ladies! It's called 'Pride and Prejudice.' Is this about the lady who makes you weird?" Phoenix barely suppressed a laugh while Rhys closed his eyes and prayed for patience. "No, buddy," he said. "That's a different kind of story. About different kinds of ladies. From a long time ago."

Not you… The man’s smile just stayed on his face and the next thing he said, my wolf took it heavy. “ Looks like I’m going to have to force this wolf back into its cage.” He told us and his eyes glowed once more….. To Be Continued.... End of Book 1...
