Lily lay motionless beside the wrecked van. Her face was swollen and covered in bruises. Cuts marked her skin. Her clothes had been ripped during the struggle. She looked so small lying there. The book fell from my hand. He devoured me. Tongue flat and broad, then pointed, flicking my clit. Two fingers slid inside, curling, pumping in time with his mouth. I was loud—couldn’t help it. Moans echoed off the shelves.

But we weren't alone. "YOU!" Rhys burst from the trees. He was half-shifted, a monstrous, twisted thing of fur and flesh. Foam flecked his muzzle, and his eyes were rolling with madness. He charged straight for me. He wanted to hurt Victor by breaking me. But he would never touch me. A black blur intercepted him mid-air. Victor slammed into Rhys with the force of a freight train. The impact crunched bone. They hit the snow in a tangle of claws and teeth, snarling like demons.

Ria gasped, stepping back, but I froze, my smugness vanishing. “You!” Rhys roared, charging toward me. “You evil, conniving snake! You sent that video to Lyra, didn’t you? You’re trying to destroy my life!” I scrambled to my feet, my voice shaky. “Rhys, calm down! I don’t know what you’re…”

Every tiny pebble that crunched under my weight sounded like a thunderclap in the silence. When I reached the top landing, the door was slightly ajar. A sliver of light spilled out onto the floor. I pressed my face to the crack in the wood. It was Rhys. He was hunched over a small wooden crate, a single candle guttering beside him. He wasn't wearing his heavy armor. Just a thin shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He looked different without the metal—smaller, more human, but also more dangerous. He was writing. His hand moved across a scrap of parchment with a frantic energy. Next to him lay a small leather tube, the kind used for messenger birds.

My voice was louder than I meant when I snapped. My chest hurt as I turned back to her. "Felza, I gave up on her. I misplaced her with Marcus, Sebastian, and this war. I strongly believe that I will also lose you. Felza jerked, and the pain in her face made it tighten. My name is Rhys and I'm still here. I'm still where I am. "But for how long?" I lean back in my chair, pondering the possibilities. "How about a beach getaway? Somewhere peaceful and serene, where we can unwind and enjoy the beauty of nature." Sarah grins. "I know just the place! There's a secluded beach resort I've heard about. It's surrounded by crystal-clear waters and pristine white sands.
