I don't want to be accused of being rude. Mrs. Lorenzo observes the bottle and then she turns to her husband and nods. I guess it's the real stuff. It looks like a perfume, guess I'm going to spray the stuff on her. "Are you guys sure that's the real thing?" Dad asks Mrs. Lorenzo, she looks at the old man and he nods. What happened to this man? Did he lose his voice or something? "Okay." Dad gets up and so does mom and I follow. Mrs. Lorenzo gives him the vervain.

POV Ruby "I can do this. I can do this. I HAVE to do this." I mumbled to myself as I wobbled out of my room. It was late or early, depending on your point of view. I knew that I had to be quick but I needed to see it. To be sure.

I stood in the kitchen, dicing some vegetables for the food I was cooking for dinner. I had gotten my first pay just yesterday, and used a small amount for the groceries we needed at home. The world above seems to tilt and for the first time, the ground also pulses under my feet. I feel the network of roots, the delicate tendrils and older roots interface. It is a new level of closeness to nature that I am new to. One that directs me to the single glowing herb root which I suppose must be the Auro Herb. The closer I feel to nature, the more the world tilts. Until I find myself slamming into the soft earth. I groan, and hear a rustle of feet behind me– Reagan’s perhaps. “Damian.” I hear his voice from so far away, with a hint of urgency and concern.

As Mara celebrated the retention of her job, Leo was there at the farm stumbling through his. It was no easy task for him. He had been saddled with the task of digging out stumps of trees from a small area of land. He straightened his back; his shirt sticking to his sweaty, hot skin and cleaned the sweat off his brow. He reached for the bag he had left on the ground and pulled out a bottle of water. Steadying his breath, he tilted his head back and I watched his moist Adam’s apple carry the water down his throat.
