It was Logan Wilson. He was a sixteen-year-old wolf boy, heir to the Alphaship in the Cerridwen pack and incredibly proud of it. The territory covered the whole of Kellington but after my family was forced to move from our previous pack, the Alpha, Logan's father, had permitted u to settle there and live as rogues alongside the humans of the town.

“Good afternoon, Sir Rowan. I’m Zen, a representative from the main camp that Gunter sent to assist Stoneberry Keep’s situation.” Sir Rowan was an old knight, older than Zen thought was possible. He was as thin as a twig with a long white beard and bushy brows. The elderly knight had a matted look in his eyes, indicating his impaired vision and needed someone to repeat Zen’s words into his ears, indicating his hearing difficulties. Yet, his poise remained grandiose as it did at the peak of his career. Deeply humbled by the NPC’s incredible presence, Zen lowered his head as a sign of respect to the knight.

“Tighter than I thought. The rumors around were true, you are smitten by her.” Her smile sharpened. “Good.” Hunter shifted beside me. “What do you want?” She rolled her eyes. “Men and their impatience. I’m here to tell you something important.” She paused, letting tension twist in the room. “Your little rogue visitor? Rowan? He’s not done. He’ll come again. He likes patterns. And he is not here alone, he is going to play her like a chessboard. He will move things in order to please him. The one little complication that he is not familiar with, at least, I believe that he is not… is me.”

I needed to be calculating every variable that would lead me to Irene. ​“Devon,” Raymond said, snapping his fingers to get my attention. “Alpha Rowan was speaking to you.” ​I slowly turned my head, fixing my gaze on the older wolf. Rowan was a stout man with a beard that hid a weak chin and eyes that were too close together. He thought he was a player in the Great Game. He didn’t know he was just an NPC in my personal hell. ​“I didn’t hear him,” I lied, my voice flat.

I laugh so hard, I almost wet myself. There’s a knock at the door and Torstein pokes his head round the door “Princess Orianna?” he asks “Yes Uncy Stone?” Ori beams from her dad’s lap. Torstein groans “It's your own fault for explaining the meaning of your name” I point out “That’s the worst part.” He answers, before turning back to Orianna “Lord Reuben is here to see you” “Yay! Roo!” she squeals, excitedly. “Roo?” I ask

My wolf growled beneath the surface. I stepped forward, closing the gap between us. “If I were you, I’d thread my words carefully. You're not welcome here. And if you so much as look at her the wrong way again, you'll learn exactly how permanent my power is. And where my woman stands, and how I am going to make sure that you don’t cross limits like that with her again.” Giovanni held my stare for a moment, the tension like a live current between us, before he raised his hands and stepped back with a smirk. “As you wish. I’ll be seeing you soon… Damon. Sienna.”

Tori leaned towards Rowan who was just smiling beyond the steel bars as she touched the sigil of his Duchy on his right chest. Grasping her hand, Rowan's eyes met hers with just the steel bars separating them. "I present myself to you, Lady Victoria Rozenreff, as your knight and the official heir apparent to the Castaña Dukedom. With this title, I swear to protect you and the endeavors you will take. I will be your sword and shield against anyone who wished and will wish you harm." Without losing eye contact, Rowan brought her hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles gently.

He carried no weapons, but every part of him read like danger wrapped in exhaustion. I lowered my stance. “Who are you?” He jumped down with the ease of someone who didn’t care how far he fell. Snow puffed around his boots. “The one you’re looking for calls me Riven.” My heart stopped for a beat. “You’ve seen Seren?” He nodded once. “Saw her fall. Saw her vanish. Saw something come after her.” Rowan drew his bow. “And you didn’t think to help?” Riven shrugged. “I don’t help people who burn brighter than gods. They tend to explode.”
