Scholar Rai held the ancient scroll between two calloused fingers, studying the faded ink with narrowed eyes. The papyrus was brown with age, the content written in a verbose and grand manner, as was usually the case with writings from hundreds of years ago. Its importance could not be translated into words. In fact, it surprised him that his lord father managed to keep these imperial treasures away from the capital. It had taken him twice the usual time to understand the runes. He found himself impressively overwhelmed not only by the sheer historic importance of these documents, but also because the prophecies spoke of the expiration of the bloods of the Old.

I wondered why my father kept people like this in the palace. The hall fell into a great silence when some royal guards rushed in, heading straight for the King, bringing everyone’s focus back to the present. “My King, we found this in Karina’s chamber. The scented paper is a special product of Dehova, and the writing is in their ancient script, which we can’t decipher,” one of the guards reported. My father’s expression turned serious as he read the letter. His eyebrows furrowed after finishing it, and while he seemed tense, he maintained a calm demeanor.

Then one of the younger guards reached for the cedar chest at the foot of her bed, the one where she kept her linens. He lifted the lid and paused for a moment. “Sir.” The lead turned, walked over. The young guard held something out several folded pieces of parchment. Worn at the edges, sealed with a broken press. “What’s that?” Cassie asked. The guard unrolled one. Eyes narrowed as he scanned the contents. Then handed it to the officer. The officer read it aloud. > “When the hour comes, I will open the gates. The Alpha won’t see it coming. I’ll take what I’ve earned.”

"Nothing unusual in the Beta's records as his servants claim he appeared normal before his death." Rowan frowned. Normal men did not write suicide letters and normal men did not die the night before their rise to power. His fingers tightened around his cane. Then another guard entered. "My Lord." Rowan looked up. "What is it?" The guard hesitated. "We discovered something." Immediately, Rowan leaned forward. "What?" The guard exchanged nervous glances with the others, then carefully placed a folded parchment upon the desk. "We found this hidden among the Beta's belongings." Rowan opened it.

A Royal Guard stepped into their path. "Papers." The lead merchant quickly handed over a rolled parchment bearing the royal seal granted to approved traders. The guard studied it before motioning toward the wagons. "Search everything." Several soldiers immediately began inspecting every crate. Rowan remained perfectly still. This wasn't the first time he had stood within these walls. He already knew the palace. The towering stone arches, the sprawling courtyards, the endless corridors. None of it surprised him. What did, was the security. The number of Royal Guards had nearly doubled since his last visit.

"We have come to reclaim stolen property." ​Cassian’s gray eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "Mind your words in the presence of the King, trader." ​Varek completely ignored the warning. He reached into his coat, pulling out a tightly rolled piece of thick parchment and handing it to a nearby guard. "Our official ownership documents." ​The guard carried the papers up the steps, handing them to Cassian. Cassian read through the ink carefully before passing them down to Kael. ​The King glanced over the papers for a single, quiet moment. His expression never changed.

I got taken from my thoughts when he spoke again: "She is now the queen of the underworld, rumors have it that there is even a Lycan in the mix!" His words were like petrol on the burning fire inside of me. I looked at him with a psycho smile I said that I will give him protection as he might be useful to me. Once his facial expression changed to relief that is when I left.

When I opened the door, a guard stood there, holding a sealed note. “My lady,” he said respectfully. “I brought information regarding the magical artifacts Alpha Hector asked us to search for.” My eyes widened. “Wait… really?” Excitement rushed through me because this could be the answer we had been waiting for. I reached for the note. But the guard quickly pulled it back. I blinked. “…What is it?” He looked nervous. “I’m sorry, my lady. This is for Alpha Hector’s eyes only.” That stopped me and I stared at him, confused.

But as his eyes swept past her—drawn not by her defiance, but by something behind her—his anger briefly gave way to curiosity and his gaze landed on the table. The edge of an old scroll had come unrolled amidst scattered papers and ink-stained notes. The parchment was worn, but what caught his attention was the seal—a broken wax crest he hadn’t seen in decades.
