Maria says, touching the glass. “My name is Rhea,” a dark-haired girl said, getting to her feet. “This is my brother, Benson.” She points to the young man sitting beside her. “I have an elemental power.” She points to the glass of ice, and it quickly melts and begins to boil. “Fire?” Maria asks touching the glass. Rhea nods her head.

Madeline’s eyes widened. “Really?” I nodded. First, I took her to the bathhouse for a proper wash. Then we bought her two new outfits to replace the dirty ones she’d been wearing. After that, we went to a hair salon and got her a neat bob haircut. Madeline stared at her reflection. It was as if she had become a completely different person. “Will he like me now?” I shook my head. “This is just the first step.” “What’s the second step?”

A human girl called out to me. “Go ahead put it through,” I said walking into my office. Who was calling me and why? “This better be good,” I growled on the phone. “King Gideon how nice to hear your voice. I was beginning to think we’d never cross paths, I am Rufus second in command at the Council.” “And what can I do with you?” I snapped. “I haven't messed with any of your laws.”

I’d been there from the beginning. They started as strangers. Alan, all sharp edges and silence. Amaya, all quiet fire and careful strength. Two people orbiting each other. But now? Now they were curled on a couch, legs tangled, looking up rental prices for a bigger space to share. Their space. Their future. And me, sprawled in the middle of it like I owned the place. Sure that she wasn’t crying anymore, she turned to gaze at me like she was admiring something. “The Alpha, the only one who acquired the flame sword Aura without a teacher to teach him or an elemental wolf link connection.” I went silent, stunned by what had crawled into my ears. Ryu didn’t learn flame sword aura from a master, nor was he an elemental wolf. That had to be one of the craziest things I’ve heard. “The Alpha is the strongest amongst us and is also the only one who could ever chase off the Moon Hound Pack who kept to our tail. Their Alpha is such a jackass.”

“Let’s go someplace quieter, please. Today has already been much too exciting for the little sleep I got. I’m tired.” I could tell from her relieved expression that she agreed. We quickly ditched the fanfare as it died down, headed back to our tents. I immediately spotted Rufias stalking towards us; he was fully-Shifted, with his tongue hanging out from his mouth as he plodded along. My heart soared to see him back on his feet so soon, even if he did seem to limp a bit! There was a heavy bandage wound around one of his shoulders and another one around the knee. His silvery coat shone as brightly as I’d ever seen it, even so.

Raf said, and Saraya nodded. “I’m partly a werewolf, partly a vampire, partly a male witch/wizard, and last but not least, a male fairy,” Raf exclaimed and raised his hand. Saraya saw the table lamp floating in the air. “Wow,” Saraya exclaimed in happiness and eyed Raf. He was gazing at her with a smile. “I wanted to keep you away from me, but look—despite all my efforts, Moon Goddess was adamant about bringing you back into my life,” Raf said, and Saraya smiled on hearing this.

Cat backed away respectfully. "Whoa, that was fast," I whispered as I held my moth-covered arms out, careful to not injure their delicate wings. "Do you guys wanna help us out? We've got a lot of hurt fairies here, and we would appreciate anything you could do for them." The swarm left me instantly; spreading out among the wounded. Glittering dust drifted down; settling in cuts and seeping into skin. Flesh knitted together, bones mended, and limbs twisted back into proper alignment. I just watched it all in awe as Cat returned to my side, and Tiernan joined us, sliding his hand into mine. I looked over and saw him staring down at me with a tender expression.

He had never used his techniques with anyone, so this was his first time, and they were sure getting a taste of their own medicine. Hearing Raya’s scream had him conclude what he had to before charging in the direction of panic clinging on to him. He burst through the doors, which happened to be the ones Raya’s uncle and Darius, with a few guards, were in. “Welcome Axel,” Raya’s uncle states with a smirk Dangling on his lips. Axel paused roaming his stare around for her figure but she was nowhere to be found. Fuck!

He kissed her forehead one last time, whispering, "You will be just fine, little one." Stepping back, Rufus began to chant, pouring all his magic and all his heart into the spell. The air around them grew heavy with power as the baby’s eyes fluttered closed, succumbing to the deep sleep. The cabin, once a refuge in the forest, began to fade, dissolving into a dark void until nothing remained but emptiness and cold. With his energy drained, Rufus knelt beside the cot, gazing at the sleeping girl. His strength was nearly spent, but he knew she was safe—for now.
