Pain ripped through my ankle so sharply I cried out, and when I looked down, blood was already sliding from the torn skin onto the concrete. “Fuck,” I breathed shakily. Before I could pull myself up, they were already there. They surrounded me slowly, like hungry wolves cornering prey. “Look what we have here.” One of them grinned, showing alcohol-stained teeth. “A bird.” His hand reached for me, but I shoved it away instantly.

Chapter Twenty Two: Aftermath and Reckoning The mountain lay shattered beneath a sky heavy with smoke and ash, a jagged wound where the Caldera complex once stood. The air hung thick and choking, bitter with the scent of burning metal and earth torn open. Eden’s lungs burned as she sucked in every ragged breath, her body trembling—not just from exhaustion, but from the adrenaline still coursing through her veins. Beside her, Roman crouched on the rocky ground, brushing soot from his hair, his sharp eyes scanning the horizon as if expecting an enemy to rise from the ruins at any moment. You haven’t seen the videos?” I asked eyeing the croissant on the tray. “I couldn’t bring myself to look at them.” She replied honestly, “You should have. It’s just a few scratches. Nothing unfixable. But it’s not safe right now. The Russians destroyed the security system so until they install the new one, we can only stay with Xander.” I walked to the bed and yanked the croissant which has been taunting me ever since she stepped in here.

That's crazy,” he said, amused at the fact that I just won the match and that made him twenty-five hundred dollars richer.

“Dri… baby, please. I’m so sorry. I fucked up. I can’t stop thinking about you. I’m drunk and miserable without you. Come back to me. I’ll do anything. I swear I’ll—” I hung up before he could finish, my hands trembling. A second later a video came through. I opened it before I could think. The footage was from my old apartment. Carter had broken in. He was smashing things, my favorite mug, the framed photo of my mother, tearing clothes out of my closet, throwing books across the room. His face was twisted with rage. “You think you can replace me?” he screamed at the camera. “I’ll burn everything you own. Come back to me or I swear I’ll find you and make you regret it.”

Jason followed him and glanced back once with an apologetic smile while the cold girl named Alyssa stared at Noah for a bit before taking her leave too. Noah, on the other hand, frowned. He didn't know what the man was talking about. To his knowledge, Ruins were sort of like inheritance grounds where a high level Battlesoul master once lived while they were alive. The things found could be weapons, Elixirs, resources or battle techniques. He didn't think that his three-day absence would cost him some valuable intel.

He had to find Lucy, and he had to do it now. When he reached the ruins, he was met with a scene of devastation. The rogues had left a trail of destruction in their wake, and the once majestic ruins were now marred by the signs of a brutal struggle. He could see the tracks left behind by the kidnappers, leading deeper into the ruins.

Ash still rained from the broken sky, and every breath Maxim drew felt heavy with soot and silence. The battlefield beyond the ruins had quieted for now, not because the war was done but because both sides had spent themselves nearly to breaking. The Vale smoldered in pieces: charred banners half-buried in rubble, shattered steel sunk into the earth like gravestones, and the faint hiss of cooling cinders that once had been homes.
