My shirt clung to my body due to the sweat. My heart beat at a speed I wanted to stop. To get a button and press it for it to slow down. A switch to turn off the feeling that refused to go away. I opened my mouth gasping for more air. It was not enough. The air I was breathing into my lungs. My system felt dry and itchy. My chest burnt. I increased my breathing. I was going to die. I formed a fist and hit my chest multiple times. Maybe that was going to take it away.

Like someone had scooped everything out of me and left only silence behind. My breathing started to feel strange, shallow, fast, uneven. I placed a hand over my ribs, trying to match my breaths to the rhythm I learnt a few hours ago. In… two… three… Out… two… three… But it didn’t help. My fingers slowly turned cold, my vision sharpened and blurred again, and a ringing sound filled my ears like someone had placed a loudspeaker inside my skull. I tried to stand, but my legs buckled, and I grabbed the bed for support.

Elena POV Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. Something heavy surged in my chest as I shifted back and realized that the breathing exercise wasn’t working. My heart started pounding fiercely against my ribs as if it couldn’t wait to get out. It definitely wasn’t fear burning in my veins as I forced myself to breathe through my nose, even as mind numbing pain travelled from my chest, to my arms, to my spine. I licked my dry lips. No, It wasn’t fear. I couldn’t allow fear come into my mind, not right now when it felt like waved were crashing against my ears.

I need to breathe. I explode from the water, spraying droplets everywhere. I fill my lungs with the sweet, life-giving air. The pleasure boat I fell from is close, but it's not getting closer. Merely, a sudden feeling of anticipation surged through my arteries, making my heartbeat erratic with such a sudden fast pace in my chest that my every breath came out shallow and hard. It was excessively difficult to breathe. Trying my unruly breath to quiet down, I breathed through my mouth, inhaling and exhaling the fresh air to calm my nerves. I'm actually having difficulty breathing, not only because of my anxiety but mostly because of the overwhelming fear I'm experiencing right at this exact moment. Who would have thought that I would be as rebellious and obstinate as I am today?

Jumping jacks, high knees, burpees, and suddenly my lungs felt tight, like I couldn’t quite catch my breath. Weird.
