It stopped halfway, catching in my chest like something was blocking it. “Not now…” I muttered, my voice strained. My fingers curled slightly, pressing harder against each other as I tried again. In. Out. In— It didn’t work. My chest tightened more, a sharp pressure spreading through it, making it harder to pull in air properly. My heartbeat picked up, faster, louder, each beat hitting harder than the last. I leaned forward quickly, my elbows pressing into my knees as my head dropped slightly, my breathing coming in uneven bursts now.

I press my hand flat against my sternum the same way I did the first night. It doesn't help. The growl holds for longer than it has before. Maybe thirty seconds. Maybe more. It's hard to tell when your whole chest is vibrating. Thankfully, it eventually eases off. I sit up in bed and pull my knees to my chest and breathe. Okay. So that's still happening. Great news. I reach back under the mattress for the notebook and add a new line at the bottom of the list. *The thing inside me is getting louder. It feels scary.*

ROSE My head is pounding and throbbing and it feels extremely heavy. My entire body hurts, but nothing is quite as bad as my chest. It is by far, the worst pain I have. It is so hard to breathe. And I can’t seem to move either of my arms. My left feels like it is tied up, but the right one has this nice warm tingling sensation moving up from my hand. It doesn’t feel tied up like the left, but like a weight is holding it down.

Everything feels like it's happening ten feet away from me, like I’m not entirely in my own body. My stomach keeps flipping. My breathing won’t settle. My throat feels too tight, and every inhale feels shallow, like I can’t get enough air into my lungs. Fuck, I’m such an idiot. I slow down without meaning to, my feet thudding against the trail while dozens of others pass me. My vision starts to tunnel, dark creeping in at the edges. My chest tightens more. I can’t breathe properly. Fuck. Fuck. What the hell is happening?

Everything seemed safe. My body didn't believe it. I lay still and looked up, waiting for the feeling to go away. No, it didn't. Instead, there was a strange pressure behind my ribs that was a warning without words. I put my hand on my chest and breathed slowly like the doctor had told me to. In through my nose. Out of my mouth. Again. Again. The pressure got better, but it didn't go away.

She asked him again, wanting to make sure he wasn't joking with her. Perry scoffed. "Didn't you hear me? Or do I have to spell it out to you like a baby?" Autumn, however, was tense. She didn't know when she began to hyperventilate. Her breathing quickened and deepened at an abnormal rate. He sat down on the edge of his bed, elbows on his knees, inhaler still in his hand, breathing slowly until the pounding in his chest steadied.
