T-they…are dead? My heart started to beat erratically, a pounding in my chest that felt as if it was threatening to burst forth. I couldn't seem to get my lungs to function properly anymore; the air felt thick and heavy, and no matter how hard I tried I could not seem to take a full breath of much needed oxygen. It was like I had been submerged underwater and every passing second became more difficult to survive. The panic rising within me only added on top.

How could she be so careless? The thought sparked a burn in his chest, a subtle tightness that made each breath feel heavier. He cursed under his breath and pushed open his bedroom door, stepping inside. The air felt too thick. He crossed to the nightstand in three strides, snatched his inhaler, and pressed it to his lips. One deep, practiced breath, and the cool rush of medicine opened his lungs just enough to ease the pressure. He sat down on the edge of his bed, elbows on his knees, inhaler still in his hand, breathing slowly until the pounding in his chest steadied.

My chest felt tight, like something inside me was pulling inward instead of expanding. Unstable. I gritted my teeth and pushed myself away from the door. One step. My foot touched the stone floor softly, but the sound felt too loud in my ears. My heart leapt too fast, slamming against my ribs as if it were trying to escape. Heat spread through my chest, sudden and sharp, blooming where something should have been anchored. I stopped. My breath caught halfway in, trapped and useless. Something was wrong. The room felt heavier, pressing down on me from all sides.

I could feel myself having a little panic attack. I couldn’t breathe, my chest felt like it was cramping, my rib cage closing in my head that it wasn’t receiving oxygen. Shooting my hand towards my chest, I crumpled my top, gasping for air for my deprived lungs. My other hand pinning on the ground. It was coming back…. Again. I didn’t know but the book in his hands dropped to the ground, he rushed over to where I was implanted to the ground, unable to hear anything.

My vision blurs with motion, and the pressure in my chest tightens like a fist. I step to the edge of the sidewalk, clutching the straps of my bag as if they’re the only thing holding me to earth. My lungs seize violently, refusing to expand. A thin, high ringing builds behind my ears, drowning out the city. I try to inhale, but the air hits a wall halfway in, and panic ricochets through my body. I stumble back, trying desperately to steady myself. The ground feels uneven under my feet. I suck in another breath, then another, but each one is thin, insufficient, like breathing through a pinhole.

My heart kept pounding in my chest as he kept stepping ahead and my legs moving back until my back hit the wall. The air around us was thick, no matter how deep I inhaled, I felt like there’s not much air and I was breathless. His expression was dark and angry, his blue eyes narrowed at me and I sensed him irritated. Apologise, Julia, my subconscious yelled inside my head. You can get out of this situation if you apologise to him. No, I will not! I replied stubbornly. I was breathing vigorously as his body was so close to me, my heart kept beating as it would jump out of my chest if he moved any closer to me. I’m trying my best to calm my breathing and not let his intimidation work on me but

Frantically, I reached up and began vigorously rubbing my hands against my neck, desperate for relief. Gasping for air, my stomach clenched in agony. The pressure in my chest was unbearable, a searing pain that seemed to squeeze the life out of me. I pressed a trembling hand against my fiery chest, hoping to ease the torment, but to no avail. Nothing ever seemed to work, no matter how hard I tried.

He got out of that shitty situation. He glanced around again. A few cars sped by. Not one driver paused to take a look at him. Maybe they all thought he was just a regular jogger in the area. He looked ahead and kept up his brisk steps. He could taste his own blood from his cut lip, and he could smell his own sweat, but he wasn't coughing up blood yet. Good sign. The consistent, annoying pain in his lower chest area whenever he breathed in was a symptom of something serious, though. The slight swelling and tenderness around his lower ribs, coupled with a little pinkish bruising on his abdomen, were also telltale signs.

My breathing increases, my chest tightens. I stumble on my feet as memories flash before my eyes. I suck in my breath. Tears gathered in my eyes. It trails down after my blinking. My sight gets blurry and I hit the ground.

I can feel sweat gathering on the back of my neck and the palms of my hands. My chest feels like it's going to explode, like my ribs are caving in and my lungs are constricting. I try to focus on breathing, but it feels like there's a heavy weight on my chest and I can't draw in enough air. My hands start shaking, and I feel dizzy and nauseous. My breaths are coming out in short gasps now, and my chest tightening. Desperate to get out of here, I ignore Devon and run to the back of the house, making it to the porch before my legs give way and I fall to the ground.
