The moment the old man’s footsteps faded near the upper stairs, Malakai moved up beside my shoulder, rubbing the back of his neck with a tense, awkward grin.
"He passed out about twenty minutes before you cleared the courtyard, Sire," Malakai said softly.
"You took the baton to him again, Malakai?" I asked.
"He started screaming that the capital's convoy was in the driveway and that his people were going to burn our distribution trucks," Malakai admitted, his eyes shifting toward the grease on his knuckles. "I might have put a little too much weight behind the handle. My apologies, Cassius."
