Chapter 7 Enemies New and Old Parker led the way, his usual swagger and smirk very much in place. He was objectively handsome, in a blond-and-stacked kind of way, but he was also such a stereotypical alpha douchebag, with his big black motorcycle boots and t-shirt with the cutoff sleeves. While talking to them, a scary thought crossed my mind: what if Peter was the bad guy? I gave the police all the clues, and they rushed out to find her because they knew she could be in danger. A week went by, and the police found a secret and creepy circus that was not supposed to be there. There was Sadie. It turned out that Peter was the boss of that strange circus. He would trick people who looked different into joining his circus and make them act like animals in his shows. Sadie was one of the people he had tricked. She did not have family or friends in the city.

We turn and see that Maddie is entering the room and stops dead, looking between Peter and Parker. Parker hangs his head to the side, crouches down, and crawls. He comes to her and says, “meow.” Maddie opens her eyes wide and says, “Wow! I think I saw a cute kitten!” We all laugh at the same time. She walks up to Parker and says, “Are you my uncle?” He tells her, “I am whatever you want me to be, darling.” I see how she frowns, looking between Peter and Parker with her arms crossed. I hang my head to the side and say, “Is something wrong, baby?”

“Piper’s going to figure this out. She’ll come looking for me. And when she does, I’ll make sure she knows exactly what kind of monster you are.” A slow smirk spreads across my face as I lean down, bringing my face inches from his. My voice drops to a chilling whisper. “Monster? You think that’s an insult? No, Adam. Being a monster is a compliment. Because I’m far worse than that. And just so you know, Piper already knows exactly what I am.” The defiance flickering in his eyes dims, replaced by a glimmer of fear that he can’t quite hide. His voice cracks under the weight of my words as he mutters, “What do you mean, she knows you’re a monster?”
