Friends…?” Sandra just stared at me. “Acquaintances?” I tried. “I used to be on the charity circuit with my father,” Sandra said, taking another sip of water. “But that fell away when I could no longer be a donor. Everything Kingsley Manufacturing makes is going just to keeping the workers paid and the lights on.”

I opened the book again and searched for the page where I left unfinished reading. I was just in chapter ten, but I could say it was full of emotion. The character of Sindy Kate was complex. She had full of flaws, yet she was also strong and driven. She was completely the Harry Bloom I knew, and she did a good job in making Sindy a heroine in the story.

How could you be so selfish? At that moment, the doorbell rang. Fable hurried to open the door and smiled affectionately at Madeline Lewis, who was standing outside. "Dad, Mom, Madie is back!"

My pulse beat too loud in my ears. “Don’t be shy,” she continued, tilting her head. Her smile stretched wider. “Talk to me. I don’t bite. Unless you want me to.” My throat closed. I knew better than to play into her. Silence was safer. Silence was survival. But Sandy thrived in silence. She fed on it. “You know what’s funny?” she whispered, leaning closer until her perfume choked me, the smell of roses and something metallic, sharp. “You and I, we’re not so different. Both outsiders. Both fighting for scraps. Both trying to make him see us.”

“Oh, maybe it’s because you left me out there on the sidewalk for two hours before you bothered to send someone to let me in!” Bianca rolled her eyes. “Calm down. You’re in now, aren’t you? Anyways, how was I supposed to know you were really going to show up? I figured you’d chicken out of attending an event like this when you’re so clearly low class.” Sandy fought the urge to slap her. She knew she needed to hang on to this connection if she wanted to keep fighting her way up the ranks and into high society. Instead, she just smiled and said, “Well, I’m here now and I’m ready to help you gather information.”

Sandy returned the pleasantries and smiled to me. “It’s running great. You can drop by anytime Jill. I’ll tour you around,” she offered. “Great! I love that! I’ll call you one day if I want to, would that be okay to you?”

Bobby nodded weakly, happy to fall in step with the couple on the far side of Tommy, where he didn’t have to see the pale and cracked vision of what Sandy Clem had become. ***
