He stops in the doorway, observing the scene—Elias taking bread out of the oven, me serving coffee, and the two children quietly arguing about present-opening strategies.
I see the moment something settles in his chest. The recognition that this is real—his, ours.
"Merry Christmas," he says finally, his voice hoarse with sleep and emotion.
"Merry Christmas," we reply in an off-key chorus, which makes Dante bark once in approval.
The conflict arises, inevitably, during the opening of the presents.
