I stared at the words floating in front of my face. The heat at the back of my neck climbed to my scalp. A person has two kidneys. You can donate one and live. A person has one heart–trade your heart and you die. She wanted my daughter dead. I did not know yet whether the floating text was real or a hallucination. It did not matter. I was not letting my daughter take a scratch. I slammed my palm down on the table and stood up.

He’s much like me, and I am so proud of my viking for offering to help him. “You will! I would love to learn,” Jared stood, smiling excitedly at Davis. “Perfect. Let’s go.” Jared’s eyes widen in surprise, but I was grinning from ear to ear, loving this interaction. My viking is this great man, who’s willing to take in the beaten and bruised and teach them to defend themselves, to rise from the ashes of their life and take claim of it. He’s a great man, one I am lucky to have in my life. Thank God for Liv, because without her I would have never met Davis, would have never seen my brother be happy, or would never have had a little niece to dote over. Liv is this set of siblings salvation.

But there were still some patterns. For example, my food always seemed to end up on Hannah's side. and Hannah's clothes always seemed to end up here. Once, I finally decided to treat myself and ordered an expensive takeout meal. The moment I opened the container, the entire meal vanished right in front of me. Hannah's scream soon followed. "Evan! Why is my pencil case full of risotto?" Another time, I was taking a nap when I suddenly felt like I couldn't breathe. I woke up and realized Hannah's clothes had landed perfectly on my face.

“That’s a good plan, Mia. It won’t be easy, but if you play this right, you won’t just save Emma. You’ll save yourself, too.” Determination settled in my chest. I had two days. To save Emma. To change my fate. And to finally make things right. The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm golden glow over the neighbourhood. I stood in front of the mirror in the small bathroom of the house Apollo and I were using. My reflection was unfamiliar—Sandy, the name I had given myself, was supposed to be a fresh start. But how could I be someone new when the weight of my past clung to me so tightly?

She would’ve pinned everything on me.” Her hands trembled as she wiped her eyes. “I would’ve been killed.” I nodded slowly. “Yeah… you’re right, actually,” I said, letting out a hollow chuckle. “You just wanted to survive. So do I. So does everyone else in this hellhole. And that’s exactly why you need to stay away from me.”

A wild wind stirred up the waves, and they lunged at the ship once more. I, Leah Dursley, clutched my stomach and clung firmly to my seat, too afraid to move. The storm crashed its way inside through the shattered windows. The familiar scene of chaos in front of me made me shudder involuntarily. I had been reborn, and not only that, I had been reborn at this critical moment. The security officer of Michael Yates stumbled toward me, holding the last life jacket. "Wear this, Mrs. Yates! Hurry!"

When I said that, Jeffrey looked surprised for just a second, but then he composed himself and gave me a book. "This is the medical book you wanted. While you were sick, I made a copy for you." I grabbed the book fast, scared that I might start crying at any moment. Back in my room, I looked through the copied book, touching the confident writing. There was only one copy of this medical book in the entire world, and it was kept by a collector. The borrowing process was difficult, and anyone who got it had to return it within a day. Jeffrey probably stayed up all night to copy it.

I was scared shitless of what might happen to me if I didn't take immediate action. Just then, an idea popped up in my head and I decided to try it. After all, what danger could come near me just because of one book. I decided to take the book back to my room. There, I would be able to read it in peace without the fear of anyone walking in on me. Also, I would be able to digest more of the words and know the next steps I could take in saving myself because at that moment, I didn't trust anyone around me.
