Even after I woke, even after I scrubbed hard at my skin, I could still feel the rough hands of Jackson's friends clutching me, their foul laughter in my ears, their weight pressing me to the ground. And then the wolf. The big black wolf with eyes like burning coals. Its snarl still echoed in my mind.

He shrugged. "I'm not sure why but I just feel like we should lick it." Though confusion was plain on my face, I didn't question it. The urge to lick it was becoming very hard to deny. I laid her back on the blood-soaked grass and shifted, shaking out my fur once I did. I lowered my head and cautiously licked one of the wounds. I tried not to think about what I was doing. Pulling my head back I froze when I saw that the wound had healed into a scar that looked years old.

“That’s when I heard the dog on the steps. “I heard its nails first. Oh, God . . . we used to have a black lab. Lady. When it’d storm at night, she’d always try to get into bed with us. You’d hear her climb the steps and it was exactly like that. That scratchy sound on the steps. Slow. Timid, I guess. It was like that. Then the steps started to creak loud, like when Ed goes up and down. And I— I got this picture in my head, it was like I could see it. See its shadow on the stairs. It just got bigger and bigger, and I could hear its hair scraping on the walls like a big brush and it just got louder. I was hysterical, I—I haven’t been so scared in my entire life. Almost over come with the strangest urge I bent down and patting his head I said, “Sorry. I had to.” At my words he licked my palm making me chuckle and just as I was about to tickle its soft fur on his back I felt a murderous aura surround me. A chill ran down my back and remembering who had entered my room I froze in my place. Are you insane, Lycia? How could you forget your mom’s presence? But I am sure people who have pets would know how hard it was to resist the puppy dog eyes.

Alys raised her eyebrow and slowly handed her bandaged hand to her mom. “What?” Alys asked, as she watched her mom carefully start to remove the bandages. When the last piece was gone her mom gasped in surprise. “What? Is it infected?” She pulled her hand back from her moms grip and stared at her hand, right there in the middle where she had a deep gouge the night before, she had an angry red scar. It should be scabbed over and still very sore. It looks like it was over a week old already. “How is this possible?” “I think perhaps your wolf feels her mate and is starting to stir. The bond must be waking her up.” Clary’s eyes met with hers and they both stared in shock at one another.

They’re a dark, hickory brown. Without warning, my wolf darts forward and buries his nose in her hand, snuffling and slurping. She yelps. Her fear spikes, and then it retreats, disappearing with her abrupt laugh. My wolf is smug with satisfaction. She snatches her palm away and wipes it on her thigh. “That’s so gross. Your nose is wet.”

They sat with each other like that in silence for a while. A fallen leaf dropped down from the tree and swirled in the wind before landing on my wolf's head. Lucas flicked the leaf off her head. She shook her head and body to let her fur be puffy. Then, she shifted a bit closer to Lucas and said, "The wound on your hand looked pretty bad." "It's none of your business," Lucas said. He swung his hand a few times and the wound disappeared. Only blood still existed. He raised his hand and licked the blood dripping from it.

She stayed motionless for a bit, not moving, still holding lightly to the severed hand she held in her lap. Rager lay there on his forepaws, not moving as she moved to come closer to him. She scooted a bit closer and even placed the hand on the floor beside her as she reached forward, placing her hand in front of Rager's nose. What was she doing? Was she not fearful of this massive large black beast that was lying on the floor in front of her? She just held her hand in front of his nose, waiting to see what Rager would do. Finally, Rager lifted up his head and started to sniff her hand. He smelled blood and began to lick between her fingers, in an attempt to get the blood off her hand.

~~ I ended up falling asleep next to the wolf, and when I woke back up, the snowy wolf was still laying next to me. "Hey, buddy" I say, yawning. He lifted his head up, licking my face, making me laugh. "Well, your definitely feeling better!" I say, happily. When I get my hand off the wolves wound, my hand was covered back and front with the wolves blood. It was actually sticky, he whimpered in pain when I took my hand off because his fur and blood were stuck to my hand.

“Then this... man... came up and started asking questions about him, wanting to pet him. My dog got scared and bit him. I think he was trying to eat my dog!” I glanced down at the little dog, who was still growling softly with its teeth bared. When it saw me looking, it growled a little more—no doubt sensing mine and Darren’s Alpha and Luna scents—and I drew my cardigan a little tighter around myself. “Eat him? Quite the opposite! Your little freak of nature bit me hard enough to draw blood,” the werewolf snarled, holding up his hand. Sure enough, there were four small puncture marks on his palm, the blood still fresh.
