For the first time ever, I wanted to hide that gory image away from someone but she had seen it already before I could stop her. Shock filled her face as she stared at the drawing but the shock vanished in a few seconds as she looked up at me. "You drew this from an horror movie? My dad enjoys horror movies too." she said and I tilted my head lightly. What was the optimism coming from her? "It's scary but I like it, can I have it? She was somewhere around seven or eight, completely absorbed in whatever she was drawing, her tongue pressed to the corner of her mouth in concentration. I lowered myself carefully into a chair near her, mindful of my ribs, and looked at the paper. The drawing was full. Not in a crowded way, in a deliberate way, like she had a clear picture in her head and was working her way across the page with intention. To the right of that, something with fangs and a dark cape that I was fairly certain was meant to be a v

figuring out where I sleep. Getting lost in a children's movie I haven't seen since my youth was a nice escape. I almost beat Liam to be the first to sleep, my head falling to the side every few scenes. Thoughts from the day fall back into my head as I replay the afternoon. So much blood. To keep my mind occupied, I gather up the spilled crayons from the coffee table and shove them back in the box. Next I line up all the paper into a nice little pile, taking a second to scan each drawing. The pages are filled with images of trees and fish. One I'm pretty sure is a zombie walking a dog downtown Main Street. Typical five-year-old drawings, I assume.

My hand moved with a desperate, jerky urgency, sketching the jagged plates of armor, the cluster of sensory pits, the impossible, spindly grace of their limbs. I drew them hunched over their work, a terrifying display of biological alienness. When I finished, I held the paper out to him, my breathing ragged. "They’re not waiting to attack, Caius. They’re just... existing. On the other side. They’re everywhere."
