Calen takes me up on my promise earlier, but the artist in me can’t do a simple drawing, so I wind up giving him an outline of a dinosaur. “That’s a pretty dinosaur,” he tells me. “I’m glad you like it,” I grin, shading it in. “What else would you like?” “Umm, a umm a…big bad wolf who scares bad guys.” “Okay,” I nod. “I can do that, but I need it to be a surprise, so you need to sleep first.” “Aww,” he frowns. “Just for a bit,” I offer. “You’ll leave.” “I won’t, I promise,” I tell him, putting my pinky finger out. “Pinky swear.”

Or maybe he is struggling with the loss of someone close to him, or maybe he has terrible nightmares each night and is looking for an outlet…I’m truly reaching at this point. Perhaps some of these explanations would make perfect sense, if it weren’t for the uneasy feeling in my stomach. The drawings are just so...unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Is Noah really like this? I can’t imagine he would be, from the times I’ve met him, but how could I gauge from those small moments what he is truly like? He’s drawn demon like creatures emerging from a smudge of darkness. Do you believe in vampires? , Those creatures with long white fangs, You might think they drink human blood, But it’s just in your mind. You might believe in witches, They laugh with a scary look, You might think they have black cats, Or a bat to cook for food. You can imagine all sorts of creepy things, That makes you shudder with fright, But please don’t yell mommy when you see them,

“Creepy? Because he’s scared of a scary-looking woman?” “You’re not scary-looking, and yes, creepy. The first day I met him he was drawing a dead animal with blood pouring out of it with sidewalk chalk on the patio outside the kitchen.” She shrugged. “Sounds like a typical little boy to me.” I sent her a get-real scowl. “I never drew pictures of bloody things.” “I have a feeling you weren’t a typical little boy, either.” That was true, but it disgruntled me to think of how accurate it was. “I think I remember a couple gruesome drawings by Ezra a time or two.”

As I bent down to pick it up, I realised it had fallen open to a specific page. The illustration staring back at me held me in place like a beast with its claws in my chest. It was a drawing of a monster with long, dried-up black hair, claw-like nails, and prominent fangs. Below the drawing was a single red drop of blood, as if it were dripping from the fangs. I narrowed my eyes, trying to decipher the ancient, jagged writing that surrounded the drawing:

I didn't know yet how much I'd regret saying it out loud. Eli reached for my sleeve while I packed the blood pressure cuff away. "Do doctors ever get scared?" "Sometimes." "Even you?" "Especially me." I sat on the edge of his cot. "Being scared doesn't mean you stop working." He considered that with the particular seriousness of a seven-year-old filing away important information. Then he reached under his pillow and produced a folded piece of paper, corners soft from handling. "I drew something." I opened it. Stick figures, all smiling, one holding a syringe roughly the size of a house. Wolves underneath a lopsided yellow sun.

"What does your new friend look like, Heidi?" Heidi proudly lifted her drawing. It was a crude, childish sketch of a very tall figure standing between two giant green trees. The figure was colored completely in dark gray and black crayons, but the most unsettling part was the face. Heidi had used a bright yellow crayon to draw two massive, perfectly round circles for the eyes.

He was too handsome for an ugly person like me. I looked away from them. On my way home, I spot an elderly guy with a huge sign along the road, written, "Beware of the beast who hides in human skin that walks among us." I didn't understand why I was so frightened when I read it. Briggs, the elderly guy, was insane; he lost his mind when his daughter went missing. Nothing he wrote on that piece of cardboard was sane. Arriving home, I went straight to my room and locked myself in. I sat at my desktop and typed in the search engine, "Beast who hides in human skin."

Others made my face burn even before my brain caught up. My heart dropped straight to my stomach. If I thought the bedroom was bad, this was... damning. There were drawings too, rough sketches of bodies entangled together. Some bare and alone on tangled sheets, others tangled with their partners. A freaking display of crazy fantasies that made a familiar heat pool between my legs. Oh God... I need to get out of here. I need to freaking get out of here... So all those suitcases and shopping bags... Goosebumps razored through my skin.
