The one that reminded her of her mother. He moved them to this weird, small town that she hates. The people are strange. They have these weird legends that they live by. Like the woods behind her house. They call it the 'Forbidden Forest' like it is a freaking Harry Potter book. No one goes in them. The trees behind her house stretch on for miles and miles, a line of trees as far as the eye can see. But people say that there is a mansion, somewhere through the perpetual darkness and the spooky trees. The people around the town also claim that it is haunted. That a monster lives in those woods and he kills anyone that goes in them.

“Well, Dekota got the itch to come sooner, so we left last night. We should have only been an hour behind you but we decided to cut across deer run to get here.” Well, that explained it. It would have saved them several hours, especially if they didn’t stop in the night. “Did you run into any trouble?” “No, but we have heard all manner of creatures. What is out here?” “Would you believe werewolf?” “Shifter eh? Possible. The woods this time of year have been haunted and there are strange white folk around.” Eris said. “Come, warm yourselves by the fire. Dekota is checking a few traps but will be back shortly.”

It was the early dawn of winter, the moon seemed to be at sleep, the stars mocking me from above, if you listened well enough, you could hear the light whispers of the winter wind: to walk through the woods at that time of year was like a death wish, the worst could happen. Remembering stories of ghosts and witches in the woods got me frightened at the least. It took courage to walk through those woods. The chilly weather wasn’t any helpful, neither were my clothes. I asked frowning, I have never heard about this. Ray laughed, “ It was in the bedtime stories, my mother and granny used to recite them to us to make us scared of going out in the middle of the night. you know how pups are! As soon as they start shifting that’s what they all want to do for a long time. The male pups even go out at night to run through the woods. So to keep me and my brothers safe, my mother and granny told us this myth. How at night a creature who is not man nor beast roams the landing of woods and if pups go there, he will eat them.”

We arrive at Dead Man’s Woods. It is dark, silent. Donnie only lives 5 minutes away from here via a shortcut path. “Ready for some real scary stuff?” he laughs. “I don’t mind scary.” I say with a slight smile. “Good Saunders. No pain, no gain.” Xane chuckles. “What’s that supposed to mean?” I ask. “Ignore him he’s being a jackass.” Donnie explains. I can’t help but go quiet. I’m in the middle of haunted woods where people get murdered or commit suicide and these fools have lured me here. Something is making my skin crawl about this.

The prickling sensation had now begun to be a tingling down his spine as his mind calculated how many things could be hiding amongst the sheer volume of deep shadows. Picking up the pace significantly once he took off, Rex started to feel a little better once he was able to see the outer edge of the forest appear, being able to see clearly see the main road that would lead him back home. Then, determined to reach her destination before her body collapsed, she continued on a path that only she knew. The town was afraid of the woods. The many haunted stories warned people off, saying it was home to evil spirits that misled people so they could never find their way out. After all, every year, there were cases of missing people foolish enough to ignore the warning, only to be found in a gruesome state right outside it a few weeks later.

Epilogue: Now that I have written several of these stories, I find that my old ghosts have started to haunt my dreams yet again. It is amazing that once things are written down, they begin to take on a life of their own. Just remember, if you don’t want things to go bump in the night, don’t tell anyone else about them.

The trees rose up high and dark above us, blocking out the sky. The hair on my arms rose up and a familiar shiver ran down my spine. I felt as if thousands of eyes were watching me from the darkness, but I was too scared to let go of Cassia’s hand to return to where we had come from. Instead, I put my faith in Dareios once again. “These are called the Nightmare woods. It’s technically part of the Darklands, but there’s a shortcut through it to the succubae village.” Dareios whispered, as if he could sense my fear and sought to calm me down.
