The Merman, My Man
I suddenly remembered her look of despair in that mirage I saw before, and somehow couldn’t bear to wake her and pull her back to reality’s cruelty, but I had to do it.
“Hey, Mary—it’s me. Time to wake up.” I gently knocked the glass tank, noticing in shock that the same speckles which appeared on Dicken’s body had grown over her as well, which left me nervous.
Nonetheless, Mary jolted awake from my knocking. She opened her eyes, and promptly shrunk to a corner of the tank as if I had scared her, leveling her beautiful obsidian eyes at me nervously.
I shifted closer to her then, so that she had a better view of my face. “It’s me, Linda—we met over a year ago.”
