Boo. I slowly turned my head toward Barnie. His shoulders were shaking. One hand covered his mouth almost immediately. He was trying… Really trying… Not to laugh. Unfortunately for him… He wasn’t succeeding. That somehow managed to piss me off even more. “What?” I motioned toward the screen. “You think this is funny?”

One of the scouts tried to climb out of the second truck, but Luca was faster two quick shots, the man down before he could react. The convoy screeched to a halt. Ghost and Luca exchanged a brief glance, their bodies still pressed low, adrenaline coursing through every vein. Their eyes met for a fleeting moment no words, just acknowledgment of the danger they’d just navigated together. The final truck attempted to escape through a narrow pass, but Ghost had already calculated the choke. He signaled the Serpents to block the route. Jinx warned. "We have a heavy incoming! Twelve o'clock!" Ahead of them, blocking the highway, a massive semi-truck painted with skulls and spikes roared to life. It was twice the size of their rig.

That guy was so creepy…. I heard tires crunching gravel before Ben’s truck came into view. I had been right. It was the newer of the vehicles, the light blue truck that was probably still about twenty years old. He was driving slowly, like he didn’t want to scratch the paint, but I doubted that was the reason since the truck had clearly been driven over many a dirt road without being babied. Maybe he just wasn’t excited to see me and wished he hadn’t asked me to go with him.

Then, from the darkness, a figure emerged. The Ghost. He was older, but his presence was as formidable as ever. His piercing blue eyes locked onto Dino, assessing, calculating. “You’ve grown,” the ghost said. His voice was rough, but there was something else there—a trace of regret. Dino didn’t waste time on pleasantries. “Why now?” The ghost exhaled. “Because you’re not just fighting a war, Dino. You’re fighting a trap.” Dino’s eyes narrowed. “Explain.”

Then, the circle vanished in a blink of an eye. Susan carried Jennet in her arms and got back into their car. "Troublesome," she muttered when she covered Jennet's body with a blanket. "Dealing with humans is so troublesome." "Are we done?" Jerome asked from the driver's seat. He glanced back, where Susan sat beside the sleeping Jennet. Susan nodded and closed the door. "Let's go back now." Jerome started the engine and drove away. Susan glanced back and waved her hand. The abandoned taxi transformed into a giant tree and the trunk road disappeared out of sight.

There was a lot of chatter on the radio, but everything seemed quiet on his street so I turned it off. Traffic on the main drag was heavier than what you’d expect on a Tuesday night. Mostly kids scooping the loop, driving down Main to the memorial by the courthouse, then up the hill and turning around in the Dairy Queen parking lot.
