"Fiona, you should stay with me. If your dad remarries, what will you do with a stepmother?" And just like that, they started arguing again. I stood in the corner, forgotten. A strange sense of awkwardness crept up on me, so I pulled up the zipper of my school jacket. The thin, faded fabric did nothing against the cold, and the wind slipped right through.

Probably not, but the part of it that would’ve been shoulders on a mammal—but the presumably venomous tip of its massive, wickedly curved tail had to be ten feet up in the air. The thing made a horrid, spine-shivering noise as it moved, the tail waving menacingly.

I grab some wooden logs and stones and start building a labyrinth with several exits, all of which lead to fire and only one to safety. The scorpion, slowly and hesitantly, begins to walk along it.
