A Red Fang scout, young, reckless, crossed the line chasing a deer. He didn’t make it three steps onto River Claw ground before two River Claw wolves had him pinned, teeth at his throat. Luna got there before blood was drawn. “Release him,” Luna said. Her voice didn’t shake. The River Claw wolf holding the scout looked at her, then at the council witness fifty yards back, then let go. The scout scrambled back over the line, shaking, furious. Luna didn’t yell at him. She didn’t need to. The shame was worse.

The scout knelt and brushed snow aside with his hand. He drew a rough shape in the frost. Large claw marks. But longer than a wolf’s. Sharper. Rowan stared at the shape. “That’s not normal.” Mira crouched beside it. “No,” she said softly. “It isn’t.” Darian shifted uneasily. “How big were the tracks?” The scout held his hands apart. “Bigger than this.” Rowan straightened slowly. “That’s impossible.” Kael’s eyes moved toward the forest again. “Not impossible.”

Cleo's house was surrounded by witches in black robes, chanting with their hands in the air. "I smell smoke." Malcolm said, sniffing the air around us. "Oh, no!" Ms. Cleo grabbed my arm, leading me to the back of the house to a back window, but witches were surrounding the entire perimeter. "Damn it. We are trapped." "Not for long," Malcolm said, transforming into his panther form. He launched off the front porch, instantly knocking two witches to the ground. When they got back up, Malcolm was already on top of them. He bit one witch in the neck and threw her at another witch. The other two witches turned on him but were quickly dispatched by Ms. Cleo's spells.

My eyes narrowed at the patrol guy that stood in front of me, swear cascading down the side of his temple. “Report?” I barked. “What is it?” “The scouts have returned from the eastern border.” My ears perked up at his words, while he took a few seconds to catch his breath. “They found tracks. They're fresh and obviously belongs to rogues. They were also trying to hide and set up a camp of some sort in the bushes, but we caught a scent.” “Whose scent?” I stiffened. “Did you recognize it?” “Its unfamiliar.” He hesitated. “But we feel like that's not all. The scent might be a decoy to throw us off….”

"Our patrols have encountered increased activity across multiple territories." A scout stepped forward. His arm was wrapped in bloodstained bandages. There were fresh injuries. The room became even quieter. "We spotted them near the eastern border," the scout said. "There were more than twenty." A ripple of concern spread through the hall. Twenty wasn't a scouting party. Twenty was preparation. The scout continued. "They weren't hunting."
