Outside, the birds fell silent. A figure stood in our garden, between the rosemary and the struggling carrots. It was neither male nor female, clad in a robe of shifting, neutral grey. Its face was pleasant but forgettable, and it held a slate of smooth, dark stone in one hand. In the other, a stylus of white light hovered, ready to take notes. “Designates: Sze and Kairi,” it said. Its voice was calm, measured, and utterly devoid of inflection. “I am Assessor Seven. I am here to evaluate Incident Report 4492-Alpha and the ongoing status of your localized anomaly.”

The creature didn't scream; it hissed, its orange core flaring as it tried to stabilize. "That’s for Phuwin, you glowing bastard!" Somito roared, bringing the mace down again and again until the orange light flickered and died, leaving only a pile of cooling, amber slush on the floor. He went quiet. "Real name: James Veritas."

Then another. "It’s not the Mother," Malakai whispered. His knuckles turned white. "Then who is it?" The terminal doors at the far end of the station creaked open. A man in a clean, white lab coat stepped through. He wasn't a wolf. He wasn't a hybrid. He was holding a remote detonator. "Subject 7B," the man said. His voice was projected through the station’s PA system. "The test period is over. Please step away from the civilian and return to your containment unit."

Luckily, these four were also new recruits who went down like dominoes getting hit by a pickup truck. The moment Jo turned back around, noting that they were at the exit for the twenty-eight floor, her IAC crackled, and then, a new voice was in her head. “Scott? Son? Are you really here?” “Dad!” Scott shouted, both aloud and through the IAC. “Yes. Do you know what floor you’re on?” “Scott, I really think you should leave. I don’t see how you can do this.
