He needed to be close to her, to let her know that he was there for her. The ICU was quiet, except for the sound of beeping machines and the soft hum of the ventilator.

And faintly, too faint to hear. A second heartbeat began to echo beneath his own.

But now you’ve been kissed twice in the span of just a few days, one being with such a handsome man! I’m too dazed to reply to her, all I notice is the erratic beating of my heart in this abnormal circumstance. But what I do find strange is that it doesn’t seem to be just my heart beating this fast, I seem to be hearing the rapid beat of another heart. Is it Dylan’s heartbeat, or is it just an illusion? Subconsciously my head tilts towards Dylan’s heart, trying to find a better position to confirm my suspicion.

The call ended and he heard a knock on the door after. “Come in,” he said audibly. The doorknob clicked and clicked. Dr Deane stood up, he forgot he locked the door earlier.

But the strangest thing was the sound. In the silence, I heard her heartbeat. Not the familiar biological thump doctors listen for through a stethoscope, but something deeper, more resonant. A slow, powerful pulse accompanied by a faint electrical hum. The sound of the Core. No longer an object in her pocket, but the engine of her body. The rhythm resonated through me, and my own heart unconsciously adjusted to match it. We were in sync. Physically. Energetically.

The nurses hurried in and out of the operating room as their movements became weird and blurred. That was because I sensed a change within myself. The flickering lights above me started to pulse in time with the warmth in my chest and the ache I assumed was caused by anxiety. Dong.. dong.. dong.. My heart beat, or Something else. Something a little older than mine. A second heartbeat… this isn't how my heart beats normally, I could feel it. I stood up, taking a deep breath while rubbing my hands down my arms to relieve the cold that had just crept up my body.

“The baby has a double heartbeat.” ‎ My breath hitched. “H– how?” ‎ ‎“One wolf... and one I can’t identify.” ‎ ‎The golden warmth in my stomach went cold.

Mandy’s POV The sound hits me all at once, so wrong my mind refuses it at first. For half a second my brain insists I heard wrong. Old equipment. My own pulse echoing back at me in the small, quiet room. The fire crackles softly to my left, steady, ordinary. A cruel contrast to what is happening beneath my palm. Not one rhythm. Not two. Three. Three distinct heartbeats, overlapping but separate. Each strong. Each undeniable. My grip tightens around the stethoscope without me meaning to. I adjust the angle, listening again, as if precision might correct the impossible.
