Maddox I heard a sound. It was subtle, yet sharp. A rustle against paper, or maybe the faint thump of a foot misstepping on the wooden floor. Then came a vibration, low and mechanical, like a phone buzzing against wood. It echoed loudly in my ears, far too loud for a normal human to catch.

It’s freezing- with no fire, the woods is as cold as stone. “Ah,” I hiss with a lingering look back to the bed. At least in the covers I am warm- No. I have to shake myself. I’ve slept enough. I want to see where it’s coming from- I have to! I focus on the sound and close my eyes. I don’t move- just listen. The sound of my own beating heart quiets as I focus on it. Where is the sound? Where does it come from? “There.” I open my eyes when I locate it.

Something feels off. I strain my ears, listening closely. There’s a faint sound, like the whisper of something moving through the air. My blood runs cold, and I instinctively press myself back against the bed, my fingers trembling as I grip the edge of the mattress. I hold my breath, straining to hear more. And then I see it.

All we could hear at first was the sharp, cracking sound of a cage breaking open. It wasn’t a normal sound. It wasn’t small. It wasn’t something you hear and ignore. It was loud. It was deep. It was the kind of sound that reaches your bones and warns you that something terrible is coming.

Just then I felt a light breeze next to me followed by a light whisper. “Use all of your senses. Let us practice the first one. Focus on your hearing. Close your eyes. Let the silence be your guide to pick up every little sound that you hear. We may be fast, but we do not and cannot move without making at least a little sound.” I closed my eyes and focused on the silence. Next to me, I can hear Ambrosius breathing. The first sound heard sounded like cracking and popping noises which seemed to be caused by a burning widespread inferno.
