It repeated over and over again. At first, it was like the drip of water, then the sound of someone being slapped, followed by something breaking, and then something hard falling. The mixed noises I was hearing were making me deaf.

There, he heard a weird sound, like a faint whispering in his ear. He tried to locate its origin but failed to find anything, his eyes scanning the surrounding area with a mix of confusion and fear. The roaring sound of the motor started fading. That was where I recognized that I started losing the ability of hearing. Aside from the ambiguous words, he said through the phone, I no longer heard. One thing remained. I was still able to smell. The aroma of his luxurious fragrance abated for a few seconds.

That’s when I heard it. The faintest sound, almost imperceptible—like soft footsteps against the marble floor, moving just outside the window. My heart jolted, and I held my breath, straining to listen. The sound came again, but this time from the trees, a quiet rustle, like someone hiding between the leaves.

I sharpened my ear to catch all the sounds in and around the pack. I can hear the owl and the chicks. I do not just hear voices. In this kind of chaotic state of mind, I can only rely on my keen and sensitive sense of hearing.

Even though the locker room was supposed to be soundproof, basically meaning that no sound should enter or go out, they could hear Davies’ name being chanted strongly.
